DSHS debaters compete in national tournament

Five Dripping Springs High School students were selected to compete at the National Speech and Debate Association national tournament June 15-20. The students were selected by a panel of Austin-area speech and debate coaches to represent the Heart of Texas NSDA District in the tournament, which was held virtually. The selection process normally involves a qualifying tournament, but due to the pandemic, competitors were selected based on the strength of their 2019-20 performances at local tournaments and the Texas Forensics Association state tournament.

Unplugged So Blue Salvia

One of The Garden Guy’s favorite new plants making its debut in 2020 has a name so unusual I had to look up the definition and give it a little thought. It is called Unplugged. Did you know we had a National Day of Unplugging?

Biking: a fine alternative for running

I am a strong advocate for running as exercise for fitness and health benefits. But, running is not necessarily the best option for everyone. This came to light from my own experience with running. When I ran marathons, I weighed 155 pounds. After some powerlifting years I decided to do a short three mile run weighing 185 pounds. I am not sure which of the two running experiences was the hardest for me. After that three mile run, (weighing 185 pounds) I said that I would never tell an obese or overweight person to start running as the best exercise. I thought the best option would be to try riding a bike so that the stress on the feet and knees would not be as harmful to them.
