“As American as apple pie?”

My grandmother, born in 1899, was a talented cook. Like many girls of her era, she stood on a box to reach the pots on the stove. Her mother, a widow, took up ironing to support her five children. My grandmother was her only daughter, so grandmother’s help in the kitchen was essential.

Movement key to maintaining weight in lockdown

Then and now: Commencement in Dripping Springs

This past Friday evening, Dripping Springs High School’s Class of 2020, received their diplomas. The 400+ graduates were seated six feet apart in the stadium, all wearing masks for protection from COVID-19. Speeches were made, graduates were certified and after the spectacular fireworks display, the Class of 2020 bade goodbye to classmates, friends for 12 or 13 years.

Health benefits of walking versus running

Since I have been walking more now than running, there are a few observations that I have noticed. It seems there are more walkers around the neighborhood than runners. It might be because of the hot temperatures in the summer and runners tend to run earlier in the morning, or later in the evening, when there are cooler temperatures. Many of the walkers are with dogs or pushing a stroller with a child in it. In hot weather, it is better for dogs to avoid long runs. Dogs do not handle hot weather well. The only way they can cool themselves is by panting with their tongue.
