The Garden Guy wasn’t stopping to smell the roses but instead stared in awe at the form of a rosebud. Even though this new rose variety called Suñorita is considered a miniflora, the bud looked like a classic tiny hybrid tea. Then — out of nowhere as if to confirm my admiration — a butterfly landed on top and proceeded to investigate.
If you love flowers that are fragrant with non-stop bee and butterfly activity, then the sweet almond verbena or tree verbena is a must for your landscape. Those traits, coupled with drought tolerance and ease of growing, were just some of the reasons it was chosen as the Florida Plant of the Year in 2008 and will be a winner in San Marcos too.
It is the weekend and I am alone, sitting at my desk, my emotions ricocheting between anger and selfpity. While the rest of my family is watching my granddaughter dance in “The Nutcracker Ballet” in one of the leading roles, I am here, dodging the latest iteration of the pandemic, now entering its third year in our country.
