Don’t you love this season? Whatever your faith, it’s the time of the year to celebrate. Some welcome family home, some bringing families of their own. Friends gather, some for one of the few occasions where folks aren’t rushing to appointments, meetings or business lunches. Students have concluded exams and have a precious two weeks to sleep or savor before the new semester begins.

Is more actually better than less? Is faster and further better than slower and surer?

At some point, it will most likely get very cold and stay that way for a while. When that happens, my website will be flooded with emails asking, “How much cold will kill a plant?” While the simple answer is “Not much,” the real answer is a bit more complicated. The cold tolerance of any plant is often determined by a number of factors, including the plant species or cultivar involved, the location and conditions under which the plant is grown, and the exact timing of weather extremes during the dormant period. Contrary to popular belief, plant damage is not generally caused by an unusually cold winter, be it wet or dry.

This week, I read reports in several media outlets that disturbed me.  I have read about this problem for several decades, and this week’s reports indicate that the problem is still with us and possibly getting worse. The news stated that, “7 out of 10 young adults are not fit for any military duty.” The stories stated that lack of physical condition prevented the majority of our youth from serving in the armed forces.
