Pick a Saturday…any Saturday during the school year, and I’ll bet you’ll find hundreds of young people from our community involved in a diversity of activities. Some may be school related, but many more can be classified as volunteer jobs, part-time jobs, classes and rehearsals for the arts and community service. As an observer, I’m more than impressed by these teens and younger children, working to make our town better and better. So, here’s some interesting facts about our youth population you may not have known...
The media is buzzing with stories about ‘warmer than usual winter days. Just this past week, we had temperatures in the upper 70s! This is certainly nice for spending time outside, but what is the effect of long stretches of warm winter temperatures on garden plants and what can you do about it? Now that is a question that lots of folks are asking me. Here are a few tips and suggestions for adjusting your garden tasks to help your garden plants cozy up to the idea of unseasonably warm winter days; and you can even do them in your shorts and flip flops if you so choose!
How many of you recall your mother telling you to, “Sit up straight, stand up straight, don’t slouch, pick up your feet, quit shuffling along,” when you were in grade school and maybe as a teenager? It was good advice and if you followed her instructions, you prevented a number of posture problems when you became an adult. This advice is especially true if you are a runner. I have seen some runners that did not follow Mom’s advice and suffer from the results.
