Tigers pull the plug on Lake Travis
Tiger Stadium last Friday was full of fans expecting to see a close, knock down, drag out battle for second place in district. The only team prepared for that was the Tigers.
The Lake Travis High School Cavaliers looked like a very pedestrian team against this year’s Dripping Springs High School football team. The closest thing about the game was the 24-6 score. At the end of the half, the Tiger defense had allowed three first downs, no yards rushing and 46 passing while the offense was amassing over 200 yards and scoring twice. Lake Travis was forced to punt ten times in the game.
Dripping Springs chose to kickoff first. After a return to the 42-yard line and pass interference put Lake Travis on the Tiger 43, the Tiger defense stymied the Cavaliers for most of the night. A punt into the endzone put the Tigers on the 20. They did what the Tigers have done in most every game: score on the first possession. It would take 13 plays, mostly on the ground.
The workhorse was Jack Tyndall who carried the ball nine times. He got the ball to the one and quarterback Maddox Maher was pushed in from there. Landon Requard kicked the extra point to make it 7-0. 6.15.
Early in the second quarter, the Tigers got the ball on the 38-yard line. Tyndall made it a twoplay drive with his patented break to the outside and down the sideline for 57 yards and the score. Requard made it 14-0 with 10.46 remaining. That would end the scoring for the half.
An eight-play, 68-yard drive in the third would kick the score up to 210. Three passes to Kyle Koch and Tristan Felder were the big plays that got the ball down the field. Maher would once again be carried into the endzone from the one for the score. Requard was true on the kick. The next possession took up the rest of the third and part of the fourth as the Tigers drove the ball from the 16. The drive stalled on the 17, and Requard split the uprights from 34 out to end the scoring for the Tigers.
Late in the quarter, Lake Travis got on the board with a 43-yard pass play. Penalties botched the extra point. On the final drive, LT made another push, and Noah Lambie intercepted a pass in the endzone on the last play of the game.
The win gave the Tigers second place in the district. This means Dripping Springs will be in the Division II playoffs, but this win guarantees a home game in the first round of the playoffs. Friday, Oct. 27, the Tigers will travel to Del Valle for their match. Kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.
