Tiger Basketball wins brings District nearer

As district nears for the Tigers, they continue to show depth and quality in their play. The latest endeavor was against a young and scrappy Burnet team. A fast start in the opening quarter led to a 68-52 victory. This past weekend they traveled to Gregory-Portland to play in the HEB Wildcat tourney.

Hot-hands in the accuracy department put the Bulldogs in a hole they just did not have enough talent to dig themselves out of. The Tigers would hit 10-13 from the field and 4-4 from the line to run out to a 28-15 lead after one stanza. Tyler Smith was fouled eight seconds in and he dropped both and the race was on as seven players added points. Xavier Phillips would get all of his points, including three threes at this time.

Aided by fouls, two of the three variety, Burnet was able to hang and even get it down to seven (35-28) with three minutes left in the half. A 6-2 run to finish the half allowed the Tigers to take a break with a 41-30 lead. It was another torrid quarter in the third as the Tigers were 8-10 from the two-point range and Burnet did not have good answers to find the Tigers ahead 57-37 after three. It was mostly a free throw exhibition for the Tigers in the final as they dropped in 5-7 to help the final score.

Although waiting on a couple of players to get healthy and contribute, the depth comes to light as there seems to be no drop-off regardless of who is in the game. That also creates a dilemma for a coach because most likes to have a set group to call on when the season gets well underway. Certainly, a much better option than no choices.

Scoring in the game were: Alema Louis 13, Trace Young 11, Phillips 11, Price Siemering 7, Colin DeWitt 6, West Weichert 6, Smith 6, Ben Bondurant 3, Jayden Guevara 3, Kyle Rioux 2.
