Tennis duo heads to state

Dripping Springs sent two doubles teams to regionals and missed by a whisker of sending both to the state tourney. Both took the same route, going undefeated until the finals and then having to go the playback route. There was a time under a different format that would have put both teams in the state tourney. What happened was the team having to play the number one seed in the semis and losing had a case they had a bad draw and could have defeated the second place contestant, if given a chance to play them. The remedy was to have the two play each other and that winner have to play the loser of the finals match and that winner gets second place and a state berth. That way no excuses.

The mixed doubles team of Whitney Robbins/Henry Lovelace won their playback to earn second place. The boys doubles team of Corbin Adcox/Aidan Johannsen did not and placed third making them the alternate team should someone not get to go. The state tourney will be held at the Northside Tennis Center in San Antonio on May 20-21.

Mixed doubles results: def Moran/Fehse (Floresville) 6-1, 6-0; def Martinez/Cantu (Pioneer) 6-1, 6-1; def Lazenby/Owens (Flour Bluff) 6-2, 6-3; lost Miller/Miller (Georgetown) 1-6, 6-1, 5-7; won playback Wilfong/Raimondo (Boerne Champion) 7-5, 6-1.

Boys doubles results: def. Holubec/Knauth (Georgetown) 6-4, 6-3; def Garcia/Garcia (Nikki Rowe) 6-2, 6-4; def Zhu/Kim (Veteran Memorial) 4-6, 6-4, 7
