Lady Tiger Basketball shows improvement

The Dripping Springs High School girls basketball team is showing real improvement as the Rouse High School tournament results show.

The Lady Tigers came away with a 3-1 record, which gave them a 4-2 season record. They opened with a 48-44 win over Lampasas High School, dropped a 3142 decision to Boerne’s Champion High School and then came back to defeat Belton High School 47-30 and Austin’s Anderson High School 74-20.

Coach Batson was positively beaming with the possibilities for this season prior to the Kerrville game. He said the success so far could be attributed to the fact they had cut down on turnovers.

This is a solid achievement for any team because it gives your team more shots while not giving the opposition easy baskets. It also gave Batson stronger talking points in the outcome of district play.

Like most sports in District 26-6A, there are three teams that always push for the title. In the case of this year, the names of Austin High School, Lake Travis High School and Westlake High School pop up, but the rest of the teams certainly are beatable for that fourth position. Lake Travis and Westlake are also not as strong this year as they have been in the past.

Unfortunately, the Kerrville game caused a setback as two problems reared their ugly heads: turnovers and poor shooting. Turnovers kept stopping any attacks against a team that was definitely beatable.

Poor shooting fundamentals have been a problem for over a decade. Many times, a player will work hard to get in position for a makeable shot and, for whatever reason, will shoot it with a sense of urgency, banging it off the backboard with no points to show for it. A player usually has more time to make the shot than they think.

Each team struggled to score. DSHS’s Jordan Cox scored first before the Lady Antlers went on an 8-0 run. The quarter ended with DSHS trailing 6-10. The second quarter was almost a scoreless one. Kerrville hit a three-pointer at the 2.55 mark with Azaria Arnold getting the lone second-quarter Lady Tiger basket a few seconds later. The score was 8-15 at half.

The third quarter looked as if Dripping Springs would right the ship and make a run for the win. The Lady Tigers would pull to within two (17-19) with 2.13 remaining. A 7-0 run put Kerrville up 17-26 after the third-quarter. The fourth and final quarter was spent mostly intentionally fouling, a tactic that seldom does anything but widen the gap of losing. The final score was 21-36.

Vs. Champion: Azaria Arnold 10, Megan Hancock 9, Jordan Cox 7, Brylee Russell 4, Makynna Hubbard 1.

Vs. Lampasas:

Hayden Ely 12, Linan Scott 9, Arnold 9, Cox 5, Kiera O'Connor 4, Rain Collins 3, Hubbard 2, Hancock 2, Russell 2.

Vs. Kerrville: Cox 8, Arnold 7, Hancock 4, Scott 2.
