DSHS wrestling: tourneys and melees

Cy-Fair Wrestling Tourney When one has the size program in wrestling that Dripping Springs High School has, it is easy to see why you enter some of the biggest tourneys around. One of those is the Cypress-Fairbanks ISD tourney.

This tourney is considered the largest in the state, not to mention, maybe the nation. The number of participants is significant — with as many as 71 in a division. This year, the tourney was a major success for DSHS with the Tigers finishing sixth out of the 79 schools there.

Head Coach Joe Kirksey said they possibly would have finished as high as second, but one of their better wrestlers was injured and could not continue while another failed to make weight.

Alec Rill (215) became only the second Tiger to ever win a gold there. Ben Lourens (190) and Raphael Siewen (285) placed fifth. Harlan Jack (145) became the first Lady Tiger to place in the meet with an eighth finish.

In determining team places each wrestler contributes points with their effort. Those will be listed after name.

Tiger results:

106 – Jackson Shipley (12.5); 112 – Abel Silverman (8); 120 – Cole Sides (11.5); 126 – Hagen Shipley (10;: 132 – Taylor Van de Walle (8); 138 – Connor Johnson (9); 144 – Charlie Clarno (4); 150 – Shane Bookbinder (9); 157 – Mason Broussard (1); 165 – Gavin Wahl (8); 175 – Daniel Krausse-Thompson (11).

Lady Tiger results:

100 – Emma Gonzales (0); 107 – Carson Crow (11); 126 – Addison Williams (12); 132 – Ivone Rios (6).

JV Mercer Street Melee

The Dripping Springs wrestling program sponsored a giant junior varsity tourney. They named it the Mercer Street Melee.

This, too, was a success, as 24 of the 48 DSHS participants placed in the top three of their weight divisions. The places will be given following their names.
