Varsity Football Results

Using the talents of their three offensive threats, the Dripping Springs Tigers racked up yards and TD's by land and air to overpower New Braunfels Canyon 48-21 and take their first district win. Junior RB, Preston Alford would have the big scoring night with four rushing TD's and a receiving TD, while sophomore QB, Austin Novosad would toss three TD's. Senior receiver, Cameron O'Banan continued to control the airways with eight catches and a TD.

After a bye week, the Tigers were eager to get started and compete for the District 12-5A Div 1 title. Canyon had dropped back to 5A due to a new school being added to their district. Knowing the Cougars preferred to be a running team this year, the Tigers loaded up the run defense and pretty well bottled up Canyon for the entire first half as DS pushed out to a 28-0 half.

A fresh norther had blown in dropping the temperature into the 50's and made the kickers feel strong when they were kicking with the wind. The Tigers kicked off and forced Canyon to punt into the wind, getting the ball at the 50. Alford, who would carry the ball 30 of the 37 rushing plays, would take care of the first drive in three plays. He would pop for 44, sandwiched between two three-yard runs. Coleman Chapman would make it 7-0.

The next scoring drive spanned the two quarters and took 11 plays to cover 69 yards. O'Banan took a 24 pass from Novosad for the score. 14-0. Shortly thereafter, the Tigers started on their own 17. Alford made it a two-play drive with runs of 43 and 40. 21-0. Canyon missed a long FG and the Tigers were at it again. Alford climaxed the 68-drive by plunging in from the two. 28-0 at the half.

Now it was the Tigers turn to start the half from the 25 Novosad would hit Noah Lawyer in the endzone from the 21. 35-0. Now it was Canyon's turn from the 25. The back had a modest one yard gain and then skirted the end and out-raced the Tiger secondary for the final 74. 35-7. The Tigers had to punt and John Martinez pounced on a fumble at the 11. Novosad hit Alford on the next play for the score. 41-7.

The KO was mishandled and the Cougars had to start from the eight. After a one-yard gain, the old tip drill came into play. A pass was deflected off one receiver and into the hands of another that was behind everyone else and took the mail 91 yards to paydirt. 41-14. Unfazed, the Tigers marched the 75 yards in 12 plays. Alford took it in from the 10 on the first play of the fourth quarter. 48-14. The Cougars finished the scoring with a 21 run.

Even though we give the yard credits to the individuals that make the plays, anyone that knows football knows it is the horses up front that shares the credit. Alford had giant holes to dart through and was left with mostly races to the endzone. Novosad had plenty of time to find open receivers.

Tomorrow night's game at San Antonio McCollom has been forfeited by McCollom due to COVID 19 and the Tigers may be looking for an opponent to fill the spot. Check with the school website for more details.

CORRECTION: In the Lockhart game, a play was credited as a pass instead of a run. This caused yardage differences in the records set but not record holders.
