Tigers Varsity Basketball Results

Anytime you want to get your money's worth in watching a basketball game, then you need to purchase a ticket to a Dripping Springs-Alamo Heights game. The rematch at DS proved to be as exciting an event as the previous one that went three OT's before AH eventually won. The stakes were high as well. It is obvious, no one is going to overtake the undefeated Boerne Champion team but second place is important as well.

Alamo Heights had a one-game advantage over the Tigers coming in. One can usually tell the quality of a team by the way they handle pressure or mishaps. Both of these handled these questions positively, as it was hard to tell where they had made a good play or a bad one by their demeanor. They were focused on working hard and winning the game. The play was action-packed with both teams trying to force the ball inside in the paint for layups. Neither team was able to take control of the game as the Tigers hung on for the 50-47 win and put themselves in a tie for second in district with a 7-3 record and six to play.

The first quarter set the stage as it would end in a 14-14 tie. Jackson Friedman got the game started with a basket one minute in. AH went on a 6-0 run before Jayden Guevara popped a three and Luke Lawyer had a three-point play to take the lead back. A buzzerbeater three pulled AH into the tie.

Eight lead changes occurred in the second including the biggest lead of the night with DS leading 27-22 on a three-point play by Guevara. A last second basket by Aidan Bailey gave the Tigers a 29-26 lead at the break.

The teams may have taken a break but they did not take one on resumption. AH was able to take a lead in the third but were unable to extend it to more than four. After three it was again tied at 39-39. Overtime anyone? This was always a possibility as the Tigers saw three lead changes in the early going. AH got to within one (46-45) but with thirty seconds remaining they started fouling with DS in charge of the ball. Guevara calmly dropped two, as did Tony Parra with seven seconds left. AH took the ball down and took a good look at a three that harmlessly sailed left of the basket allowing the Tigers to celebrate. The Tigers hit 14-35 from two and 2-14 from two. Any close game is usually decided by free throws, and this one was no different. The Tigers prevailed 14-20 to AH's 9-14.

In their previous two games, the Tigers took care of NB Canyon 58-34 with four strong scoring quarters. Against Boerne Champion, the fast start by BC (30-14) at half offset anything the Tigers could do in the second as they fell 51-41.

Vs NBC: Jude Donovan 14, Guevara 12, Felix Gonzalez 12, Parra 8, Bailey 6, Dylan Ducharme 4, Lawyer 2.

Vs BC: Bailey 14, Guevara 14, Parra 8, Friedman 5.

Vs AH: Guevara 13, Bailey 10, Lawyer 5, Parra 4, Friedman 4, Max Stewart 4, Donovan 4, Ducharme 4, Cade Brunson 2.

Lady Tigers Varsity Basketball

The Lady Tigers are in a desperate struggle at this time to earn a berth in the coming playoffs. At the present, DS (5-6) and Kerrville Tivy (4-4) are seeking that final spot. They have been slumping of late due to a lack of shooting accuracy and sprinkled heavily with turnovers.

This past week the Lady Tigers split their two makeup games with Seguin (32-40) and Hays Johnson (46-27). The crusher was the loss to Seguin. Up until this game, the Lady Matadors had not won a district game, and the Lady Tigers needed these games badly to stay in the race. They have seven games left, including a return match with Kerrville with whom they have already defeated to get the job done.

Again, in the game with Seguin, the Lady Tigers could not get the ball to drop. They were 8-30 from two and 4-20 from three. Cutting out even more chances were the 22 turnovers.

Hays Johnson, as most know, is a new school with no seniors. It was obvious they were very young and inexperienced. Those games are nearly always tough to play a smooth game. Many times those players are not sure where they are supposed to be and end up being in the way rather than where one expects them to be. This can lead to turnovers as well, which did to the tune of another 22.

Jordan Cox ended up having the big night as she worked hard in the paint and got percentage shots and made them. Her eleven points in the first quarter was a big part of a 13-0 run sparking the 16-3 advantage after one. More players kicked in points as the half ended 29-12. The third was no different as the Lady Tigers continued to stretch their lead to 46-17. Coach Norris turned over the fourth quarter to the reserves for plenty of game experience. On the night DS was 14-37 from two range and 5-21 from three.

Vs Seguin: Corbyn 9, Caroline Gamble 8, Ella Smith 5, Lilee McGinnis 4, Cox 4, Teagan Huslig 2.

Vs Johnson: Cox 19, Gamble 8, Davis 5, Smith 4, McGinnis 3, Ainsley Ballard 3, Ally Beck 2, Kiera O'Connor 2.

Soccer jumps into the fire pretty fast. They got in a couple of weeks of nondistrict opponents, and now they have their first district game. In the tourney, another tie came about with Fredericksburg in the 3-3 contest. The Tigers followed with a 6-2 win over Temple and a 7-2 win over Killeen Ellison.

The young team representing Hays Johnson, a school with no seniors, was no match in the 10-0 final. The JV team eked out a 1-0 win to open district on the strength of a goal by Nic Quezada.
