Varsity Volleyball Results

It was well known the Lady Tigers volleyball team would encounter a more competitive district than especially the past two that produced no competition at all. Dripping Springs never lost a game in their two 14-0 seasons and most likely none of the games even came close to a loss. This all changed when the new district included New Braunfels Canyon, Alamo Heights and Boerne Champion. After sweeping Hays Johnson in their first game, a school in their first year of competition and no seniors, the Lady Tigers would encounter Canyon. Canyon, like Dripping Springs, has long been a strong volleyball school. In addition, Canyon dropped down from 6A while Dripping Springs is on their way to 6A.

The match was all that it was cracked up to be as DS hosted the Lady Cougars. Canyon quickly took the first game 25-17 but the Lady Tigers settled down to take the second 25-13 and held on for the third 25-22. Looked like the Lady Tigers would be primed to take this important match. However, Canyon was not consulted in this matter. The Cougars would tie the match with a 25-19 to set up the final tiebreaker fifth game. Canyon took the lead early and did not give it up in winning 15-13. Since the rules changed from only the offenses could score and first to 15 would win to someone scoring on each serve and first to 25 while leading by two, the results many times takes the course of a tennis match. If a team can get a three or four point lead at the 20 point stage, the game is pretty well over because it is hard to get a streak of winning points against good teams while they are getting points along the way as well

This loss also brought to a halt another unbelievable landmark. Going into this game, the Lady Tigers had put together a streak of 90 consecutive district wins dating back to 2013. Their last loss came at the hands of Cedar Park on October 8. Streaks do come to an end but can be restarted for another run. This the Lady Tigers did by taking down Boerne Champion 3-0.

Varsity Football Results

As the old saying goes “Did not see this one coming”. We are talking about the matchup with the Hays Rebels. After their big loss to Vista Ridge last week and the stout defense by the Tigers in their game, it had the feeling the Tigers were in a good position to notch their second win. Well, that feeling did not come to fruition as the Rebels completely dominated the game when it counted. The result was a 45-28 disappointing loss and it was not really that close. Game results are not always a good indication of how good a team is that loses a game. One can lose big and still have a good team. It is always tough to get a team up for a team one expects to defeat.

Hays scored on all five possessions in the first half and continued with the first in the second half to forge ahead 38-7. Their first punt did not come until the fourth quarter. The would take the opening kickoff and drive it 75 yards in 12 plays, scoring on a 10-yard pass. What was expected to happen each time the Tigers had the ball, DS took their first possession 93 yards in 16 plays to even the score at 7-7. The score would come on a 10 pass from Cameron O'Banan to Garon Duncan with 1.06 remaining in the first quarter. Coleman Chapman kicked the PAT.

It was all Hays in the second. They would score on a 43 pass, 48 and 34 runs before kicking a 27FG on the last play of the half to push out to a 31-7 lead.

After Garrett Betts returned the second half KO 25 yards to the 45, the Tigers looked like they were coming alive. DS moved the ball down to the seven before they suffered an interception on the one. Hays would drive the ball 99 yards, climaxed by a three-yard plunge to make it 38-7. Hays began calling in the reserves for the fourth, allowing the Tigers more success than they had the previous three. Preston Alford scored from the two for the first. Austin Novosad came in at QB and popped a 33 TD run and a two-point conversion to close the gap to 38-22. However, Hays broke loose for a 29 score to dash all hope. Novosad would hit O'Banan on a 43 strike for the final points.

Tomorrow night, the Tigers will travel to Lockhart for a battle of the big cats. The Lions have been struggling a little but no doubt the Tigers have proven you can't take that for granted. Kickoff is 7:30 PM.
