Dripping Springs lacrosse shuts down Boerne

The Dripping Springs High School boys lacrosse team hosted Boerne High School on Thursday, April 6.

The evening matchup was also DSYSA night, where current DSYSA lacrosse players were recognized and brought out the flag for the national anthem. The skies had opened up for most of the day, but the rain held off to get a lacrosse game in.

Midway through the first quarter, sophomore Brady Taylor got the home team on the board off an assist from Lucas Willingham. Kyle Parker followed that up a couple minutes later with a goal before Boerne answered, making it 2-1. Before the first quarter closed, Vaughan Segers scored, and Taylor picked up his second goal of the evening.

Entering the second quarter, Boerne quickly trimmed the score to 2-4, with Dripping Springs in the lead. Parker then picked up two more goals, the second of which was assisted by Owen Davis. Boerne added a goal before Drip went on a late run to close the half. Parker assisted Taylor on his third goal of the evening. Walker Wright dodged from the point and found the net with a side-armed shot, and Deacon Ivey scored in the final seconds to give Dripping Springs the 9-3 advantage at the half.

The third quarter was all Dripping Springs. Aiden Kane started things off early in the quarter, and Davis followed that up with a goal of his own. Senior defenseman Jonah Friedman grabbed a ball near midfield, quickly got up field and found a cutting Kane for the goal. On the ensuing faceoff, Dylan Reeves picked up the ground ball, spun away from a defender and moved the ball up to Parker — who found a slashing Jake Stockton for the goal. Shortly thereafter, Austin Reeves was able to assist AJ Deer on the goal. Just before the quarter’s end, Segers found Wright, who split two defenders and finished for a top-shelf goal. The Tigers led 15-3.

Boerne added a goal to start the fourth quarter, but that would be all they had left. Junior defenseman Nate Tyo picked up a ground ball and quickly moved the ball ahead, drew a defender and found Parker for his fourth goal of the evening. Segers followed that up by dodging, absorbing blows from multiple defenders and somehow got the ball past the goalie as he was falling to the ground. The Boerne goalie, who had been under pressure all evening, made a pass cross field that Stockton was waiting on. He picked off the pass and found the open net. Wright then found a lane, drove and scored for his third goal of the night before Stockton picked up his third, and Drip’s final, goal of the evening. Final score: 20-4.

Dripping Springs led in all statistical categories. The faceoff tandem of Owen Rhodes and Willingham won 18 of 24 faceoffs in the evening and picked up 13 ground balls. Tyo and Wright each had five ground balls, and Tyo led the team with three forced turnovers. Goalies Kaiden Grupp and John Ault combined for nine saves in the win. Segers was awarded the hammer.

Dripping Springs will now enter the final stretch of district play with games at Westlake (April 14), at Vandegrift (April 18) and against Austin (April 21) High Schools.
