Drip lacrosse rockets into super regionals

Dripping Springs Lacrosse swept Central-South district playoff games last weekend against Georgetown and Smithson Valley after vaulting into the playoffs the week prior with a home win against Regents. The junior varsity team also enjoyed their second win of the season against Regents JV, finishing their year on a high note. Hammer Practice Player awardees for the last two weeks have been senior midfielder John Calendar, junior attackman Brady Taylor and senior midfielder Austin Reeves.

Vs. Regents

Drip opened the scoring floodgates in the second quarter. In doing so, senior attackman Kyle Parker broke Gabe Reno’s all time scoring record of 112. Regents was unable to stop the Drip torrent in the third, either. By game end, Parker, senior midfielder Deacon Ivey, junior attackmen Dom Bruni and Brady Taylor all had hat tricks.

Defensively, Drip made transitions difficult, generally kept Regents offense at a distance, forced turnovers and hawked ground balls. Senior midfielder Mason Broussard led all players with five ground balls. The final score for the evening was 20-7, Drip.

Vs. Georgetown

Georgetown scored first with Drip off to a sluggish start - but it didn’t last long. Junior midfielder Tucker Walls finally broke the ice with a score late in the first period. In the second, Parker and junior attackman Dominic Bruni would quickly add two and three more, each, to put Drip up 6-2 at the half.

Georgetown would make one more run to try to bring the game to even but Drip’s defense, coached by senior midfielder Austin Reeves, turned up the heat, making life miserable for Georgetown’s top scorer. Reeve’s unplanned tenure as an injured player-turned defensive coach has been one of the great stories of the season. That night, it helped to hand Georgetown a 10-7 defeat.

Vs. Smithson Valley In the second of back-to-back playoff games, Drip traveled to the heart of San Antonio in a highly anticipated rematch against Smithson Valley. Smithson dealt Drip a lopsided upset earlier in the season, with players and coaches alike eager for redemption.

Drip went up early to put Smithson on their heels. Smithson would claw back to keep things close at the half and into the third. But, as most of Drip’s opponents have experienced, Drip just shifts into yet another gear.

By the fourth period, Drip was in double digits and both head coaches made the call to rest starters for upcoming regional games. Two of the loudest moments of the game came when senior defensemanturned- midfielder Jax Meyer and Broussard scored their first career points. The final score was Drip, 18-7.

Drip has now won five of seven district contests and is 15-5, overall.

This Saturday and Sunday, May 4 and 5, the Dripping Springs lacrosse club will host the super-regional playoffs at Dripping Springs Middle School. Also a participant, Dripping Springs (14) will face Kingwood (3) on Saturday at 2 p.m.. The winner of Saturday’s contest will play the following day at 1 p.m. against the winner of Pearland (11) vs Stratford (6).

Dripping Springs Lacrosse has asked all students, teachers, parents and friends of the program to spread the word, show up in force, and cheer the Tigers on this weekend.
