Tigers fall to Tivy

Good pitching usually stymies good hitting and it was never more true than in the Kerrville series. The Tigers won their first game 2-1 and then were shutout in the next two 3-0 and 5-0 to drop out of the playoffs at the regional quarterfinal round. Both teams had strong pitching performances but in the end Tivy's timely hitting proved the difference. The Tigers finished their fine season at 25-14-1.

In the first game played at DS, Kerrville put together a single and a triple in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. This held up until the sixth when the Tigers made some noise. Ryan Davenport had a one-out single. He was sacrificed to second by Brennan Frickel. Nico Ramirez had a single and after a walk, Davenport scored on a balk. It looked as if the game was headed for extra innings when the first two batters went down on flies. Nathan Koch avoided the third as an error on his ground ball also allowed him to advance to second. Nick Gullo, who had pitched seven strong innings, stroked a single to score Ty Kaatz who was pinchrunning for Koch to win the game.

The next day it was off to Kerrville to try and clinch the series. It was not to be as the Tigers could only manage two hits. Ramirez singled with two outs in the first. Zach Tjelmeland had a one-out single in the fifth but was wiped out in a double play. Tivy would get all their runs in the fourth. They drew a one-out walk followed by two singles and a double for their three.

This necessitated a return trip to Kerrville the next day. Unfortunately, it turned out to be even worse. The Tigers could only come up with one hit and committed three errors. Cameron O'Banan's single with two out in the seventh broke up the no-hitter. Two walks in the sixth and a hit batter in the fifth were the only other baserunners. In the second Tivy had two singles sandwiched around an error that led to a run. Two more errors and a fielder's choice added another in the third. Three singles and a triple drove the final spike in the coffin for the Tigers in the sixth.
