John P. Burke

March 6, 1942 – July 16, 2020

Judge John P. Burke Jr., 78, of San Marcos, Texas, passed away on Thursday, July 16, 2020.

John was born on March 6, 1942 in San Antonio to John P. Burke, Sr. and Jean (Allen) Burke. He received his law degree from the University of Texas in Austin in 1967, and practiced law in the U.S. Virgin Islands and in Texas. He worked as a Justice of the Peace and Municipal Court Judge for many years. He served in the U.S. Army, and he also served with and retired from the Texas Army National Guard at the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. John was Director on the Board for the Burke Foundation for over 35 years. He was married to Sherry Burke for 40 years. John had a passion for the water; he loved swimming and boating. He also loved to travel and ride motorcycles, which he did extensively with his son, Jay and many other friends. John was also a foster parent to over 15 children over many years.

His parents, wife Sherry, and nephew Michael Bullard preceded John in death. He is survived by his partner Virginia, his children Jay (Brenda) and Jonathan; stepsons Aart and Shane; grandchildren John, Kami, Mark, Evelynn, Isabell, and Daisy; his loving sister Rosemary (Charles); his niece Jeanne (Larry); his nephew Patrick (Elizabeth); along with cousins and great nieces, nephews; his loyal canine companion Skipper; and many friends.

Visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 21 from 4 to 8 p.m. with a funeral service on Wednesday, July 22, 2020 at 11:30 a.m., both at Thomason Funeral Home in San Marcos. Entombment will follow at Sunset Memorial Park in San Antonio.

Due to the current COVID-19 pandemic, restrictions and precautions will be in place. Donations may be made in his honor to The Burke Center for Youth.
