Voter registration deadline on April 7

The time to register to vote in May’s local and state elections is quickly coming to a close.

All eligible Texas voters must be registered to vote by Thursday, April 7 to vote in the statewide Constitutional Amendment election on May 7, as well as local elections for municipalities, school districts and other local entities holding elections on the same date. Locally, the Dripping Springs Independent School District has two Board of Trustees positions up for election. Early voting for each will run from April 25 to May 3.

Every Texas county will be holding elections on two proposed amendments to the Texas Constitution approved by the 87th Texas Legislature — both relating to property taxes as funding for public schools. The first amendment would authorize the legislature to provide for the reduction of a limitation on the amount of property taxes that may be imposed for public school purposes on the residence of an elderly or disabled person. The second would increase the amount of the residence homestead exemption from property taxes for public school purposes from $25,000 to $40,000.

"I encourage every eligible Texas voter to not only get registered by April 7th, but to educate yourself on the candidates and measures that will appear on your ballot,” said John B. Scott, Texas Secretary of State. “This is an important opportunity to determine the direction of your community and our state, so make sure to register and prepare to cast your ballot in the upcoming election.”

In DSISD, four candidates are competing for two Trustee openings: Joanna Day, Olivia Barnard, Thaddeus Fortenberry and Tricia Quintero. Currently, the positions are held by Joanna Day and Marisa Grijalva. The two candidates with the most votes on May 7 will be elected to serve a threeyear term.

The League of Women Voters of Hays County will hold virtual candidate forums for the DSISD Board of Trustees at 7 p.m. on April 6. The events can be viewed in live webinars with the candidates on Zoom or from recordings on the league’s website. Visit lwvhaysco.com/candidateforums for the event’s Zoom link.
