Speech and debate student makes school history at state

Dripping Springs High School speech and debate student Jake Broyles made school history on Saturday, March 11 by becoming the first DSHS student to capture a state title at the Texas Forensic Association State Tournament with a first-place finish in Program Oral Interpretation.

Program Oral Interpretation is a 10-minute performance that can include some combination of prose, poetry and drama.

All students must have at least two out of the three genres included in their performance. The use of a manuscript is required.

The focus of the event is development of a theme or argument through the use of narrative, story and/or characterization.

Broyles also earned a fourth-place finish in Informative Speaking and was a quarterfinalist in Dramatic Interpretation.

Alicia Hernandez claimed a state quarterfinals finish in Dramatic Interpretation while Evie Grimm and Claire Unger were quarterfinalists in Duo Interpretation.

In February, the DSHS speech and debate program qualified a schoolrecord 19 students for the state tournament. In order to qualify, students must earn at least 10 points, which are awarded by placing at TFA invitational qualifying tournaments during the school year.
