One Campsite at a Time: The Frio River

Our latest camping adventure took my family and I to a popular summer destination in Texas--The Frio River. After experiencing my first visit there during this time of year, however, I’m convinced it’s a great place to visit in the fall as well.

We stayed at El Rods on the Frio, a 14-acre family owned and operated RV park, situated along the Frio. This campground also offers a few cabins and hotel rooms. From our campsite, it was a short walk down to the river. When I booked the site, I was fully expecting to enjoy the scenery, but not necessarily the water, because you know it’s fall, not summer. But in true Texas fashion, we had a nice surprise in the weather department--the highs for that October weekend were in the 90’s. The kids frolicked in the water and you could see the slightest color change on the trees that lined the river.

Aside from the beautiful scenery, what I really appreciated about this place were all the fall activities offered. Campers are encouraged to decorate their site for Halloween, which we did. One night, they held an RV trick or treat, which of course the kids just loved. My son also did the small pumpkin maze (made of hay bales) over and over again.

Overall, this part of Texas is just stunning and there seems to be quite a few camping options in the area. I’m glad we chose to visit during what’s considered their “off-season.” As we continue exploring Texas one campsite at a time, I have a feeling we’ll return to Concan, TX for another fall trip in the future.
