Nice to Meet Ya: Tammy Mierow

A trip to the Dripping Springs Community Library has always been a pleasant experience for anyone who would wander in looking for excitement, or a quiet oasis in the contents of a book.

One of the individuals that has made it such a rewarding place, is Assistant Library Director, Tammy Mierow. For the past six years, either behind a desk or helping someone explore the library, Tammy, with a smile on her face, has been there.

She also serves as volunteer coordinator and has worked her way up from part time library clerk. She understands the workings of the library, people and books.

“Growing up, my mother would make the drive into town to the library, so we could check out books to read and for school projects. We did not have a local branch library until I was in high school in the late 80’s,” Tammy said. She admits to still being a “book junkie.” She grew up in Calallen, just outside Corpus Christi.

She graduated with a Bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts/Interior Design from the University of Texas San Antonio and then married her high school sweetheart and moved to Austin while her husband finished his degree at UT.

She became a stay-at-home mom and had the responsibility of homeschooling her two boys, finally settling on Dripping Springs as the place they wanted to call home.

“The library is where we met our first friends when my boys were little. We live outside of town and would come to the story times here every week. You see the same faces each week and ge to chatting with the moms,” she said. Both sons went off to Texas State, the oldest graduating Summa Cum Laude, with the youngest finishing up his Bachelor’s degree.

She also went back to school and received her Master’s degree in Library Science online. “It was a lot of fun, at 50 (years old) I can do this,” all while working full time at the library.

She loves connecting people with books and their preferences and genres. “I love it when people enjoy your help. That’s what I love about the job, helping people. The hardest part is not having them here (due to the pandemic). Usually, we see thousands in the summer. It’s been a sad, quiet, summer,” she said.

The library still has many services available by phone, especially online.
