The 290 Safety Coalition will host “An Evening with Hays County Pct. 4 Constable Ron Hood” on Thursday Jun. 13, from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., at the Sunset Canyon Baptist Church, 4000 E. Highway 290.

The 290 Safety Coalition is a safety campaign begun by Belterra resident Sarah Kline, which advocates a reduction of the speed limit on Highway 290 in the Dripping Springs area, and promotes local traffic safety awareness.

Constable Hood will be taking audience questions at the event, and is expected to answer the following questions posed by the 290 Safety Coalition:

  • What is law enforcement currently doing to keep 290 safe?
  • Why aren't you ticketing when you see people on their phone?
  • Why aren't we hands free while driving? How can we become hands free?
  • How often are you giving tickets for speeding?
  • What is the left lane really for? If it's only for passing, why don't you ticket?
  • How can we be better drivers? What are some of the most dangerous things you see on 290?
  • How many officers are in our area?
  • Who can we call when we see something dangerous?
  • Why don't you use unmarked vehicles for speed traps?

Kline said the groups next initiative will be to promote a hands-free (phone use while driving) legal requirement in Hays County area, which will “allow law enforcement to ticket for distracted driving and remind people of the dangerous nature of being on the phone while driving. Texas law already prohibits texting while driving.”
