Research shows the majority of homes that ignite during a wildfire are due to embers and small flames. Homeowners, however, can reduce this risk, especially by focusing on efforts immediately around the home. Fortunately, there is a program that guides homeowners into how to prepare and protect their homes. The program is called Firewise USA and is administered by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). According to the NFPA, homeowners should consider the condition of the home and everything around it, up to 200’ from the foundation. “This is called the Home Ignition Zone (HIZ).” Below are tips from NFPA for steps homeowners can take.

Dianthus looks to be absolutely ‘rockin’ for fall

Central Texans who always procrastinate planting cool season color better be on top of it this year if they want Rockin dianthus. This was a new series last year and disappeared quickly. Rockin dianthus is coming out of Pan American Seed and is perennial in zones 5a-8b. That is a huge area geographically, meaning happiness for gardeners everywhere.

October is Anti-bullying month: Bullying is serious business

At my grade school, boys and girls were segregated during recess. The boys divided into teams to play baseball or basketball. We girls had the less strenuous choices -- playing jacks or jump rope. When we played jacks, it was a matter of how many games you knew and could master -- pigs in the pen, shooting stars, around the world, etc. These games were endless.
