Nice to Meet Ya: Sharon Goss

When you are a member of the Lions Clubs International, you strive to do good in your community. As a non-profit organization, they strive to make the world a better place through the efforts of their members.

Take for instance, the Texas Lions Camp in Kerrville, held each summer for children who are handicapped or have a medical condition such as type 1 diabetes or cancer.

For one week in the summer, the kids are given a chance to try new activities and to make friends, all the while building their self-esteem.

Experiencing this, as an observer, is how Dripping Springs neighbor Sharon Goss got involved with the organization. “The reason I joined was my mother, my mentor. She lived in Waxahachie and I used to work at the old Cattleman’s Bank, and she would pick me up on her way to Kerrville for Friday night closing ceremonies at Texas Lions Camp,” Sharon said.

“The [campers] have a week without their parents and it builds so much confidence in them. Friday night was awards night. It was the neatest thing, the kids were so excited. I was real impressed with the camp.” Witnessing this camp inspired Sharon to get involved.

She joined the Drippings Springs Lions Club, where she is currently serving as Secretary and enjoys working on their many benevolent causes. Sharon is just a self described “small town girl” and loves Dripping Springs and the community.

She grew up in Avalon, Texas where her father was a farmer growing cotton and maize. “My sister and I had the same fifth grade teacher that my parents had.... Their big event was the basketball tournament. It was a small close-knit community… anybody needed help, we helped them.”

Sharon married her husband, Jeff Goss in 1981 and they lived in south Austin. In 1996, they moved to Dripping Springs. The first impression of the town was, “gee, I want to live here.”

When it was time for the kids to go to school, of course Dripping Springs was the perfect place for them to attend. All four kids graduated from Dripping Springs High School.

While the kids were in school, Sharon stayed active with the athletic boosters and with her employment at Cattleman’s Bank. She’s a people person.

Currently, Sharon works for The WF Smith Real Estate Appraisal Firm in Dripping Springs and continues to remain active in our community.

She’s been on the Founders Day Commission for “8 or 9 years,” and is really looking forward to this year’s Christmas on Mercer coming up this weekend.

“This weekend will be beautiful weather. It is a challenge, but other events have been shut down. But Mercer is outdoors and can follow CDC compliance. There will be hand washing and hand-sanitizing stations set up, masks will be handed out. Everyone will have a mask. It will be scaled down, but it will bring merriment to Mercer,” she said.

The event will be this Saturday, December 5, from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. The virtual Christmas tree lighting at the Triangle will be via Facebook at 6 p.m. on the Christmas on Mercer Facebook page and the city FB page and website.
