Bergyn Collie plays Ariel in the EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens’ production of Disney’s The Little Mermaid.

The Little Mermaid makes waves of family fun

The outdoor, summer musical currently running at the EmilyAnn Theatre & Gardens is The Little Mermaid, based on the fairy tale by Danish author, Hans Christian Andersen. Unless a person has been living in a sea shell for the past 29 years, the storyline and songs will be familiar to the audience members. Once again, Director, Bridget Gates, has orchestrated a delightful production through a well-chosen cast and crew. The colorful costuming and inventive set-designing created a fantastic, live-action diorama for the large group of actors, who all aptly added their singing and dancing talents to the show. The entire theatrical effect was both mesmerizing and thoroughly entertaining. Principle actors, Bergyn Collie (Ariel) and Nate Nelson (Prince Eric) made a sweet and engaging couple. They were the embodiment of true love. The most crowd-pleasing scene was due to the comedic antics between Michelle Pesina (Sebastian the crab) and Ameer Mobarak (Chef Louis) during “Les Poissons” and its reprise. One of the best performances came from 11-year old, Tinsley Collins (Flounder), who superbly commanded her role for one so young. Another highlight of the show was the number, “Positoovity”, which featured Melissa May Moncus (Scuttle) and other tap-dancing seagulls. So, run a dinglehopper through your hair, reel in the family, and catch the tale of The Little Mermaid. Show times are Fridays and Saturdays, June 8 through June 30, at 8:15 p.m., and one Sunday performance on July 1 at 8:15 p.m. Tickets are available at the door or on-line at www.emilyann.org.
