Dripping Springs boys lacrosse opens with win

Dripping Springs High School varsity boys lacrosse opened their Spring season with a road win against Boerne High School on Saturday, Feb. 3. This is the 11th consecutive year Head Coach Bill Cafferata’s team has won their season opener.

Coach Cafferata is joined this year by an impressive cadre of new coaches. Coach Jadon Kerry played at Duke, where he scored in the national semifinal against Penn State and was All-ACC Academic in 2023. Coach Jace Goudreau played at St. Johns and Minnesota and was a high school offensive coordinator in Minnesota before moving to Austin. Coaches Kerry and Goudreau are splitting duties as cooffensive coordinators for the high school varsity boys.

Drip Lacrosse’s new defensive coordinator, Coach Jack Fournier, played collegiately at UMASS Boston and coached for Prime Time Lacrosse prior to coming to Dripping Springs.

On the field, at attack, Drip started senior Kyle Parker, who led the team in goals and earned all-district honors last year, junior Brady Taylor, who finished 4th on the team in points last season, and junior Dominic Bruni. The starting midfielders were senior Owen Davis, FOGO senior Lucas Willingham and LSM senior Noah Chomout. Defensively senior Dylan Reeves and juniors Eli Tinsley and Brighton Peterson got the start. Junior Shane Roberts started in goal.

Last Saturday’s contest with Boerne was no gimme. Boerne scored first with Drip answering when senior Kyle Parker dodged over the top of his defender and fired a shot past the goalie. Boerne followed with three more points to go up 4-1.

The Tigers answered while in manup. Parker took the ball to the X and found junior Dominic Bruni open on the wing. Bruni ripped a sidearm shot, top shelf, to cut the lead to two.

Then, junior Brady Taylor, in an impressive solo sequence, intercepted the ball as Boerne was trying to clear. After intercepting the ball, Taylor sprinted to the goal, went one-on-one with the keeper, and scored to cut the lead to one. Boerne would answer, extending the lead to 2 goals.

After a defensive stop, senior Noah Chomout took the ball on a fast break to the goal. His shot ricocheted off the goalie to Parker, who put it away for his second goal of the game. Resiliently, Boerne again answered to re-extend their lead to two at half time.

In the second half, a Boerne attempt to clear the ball was stymied by senior Austin Reeves, who intercepted the pass with his face mask, knocking the ball to Parker. Parker took it in for his third goal of the game and his first hat trick of the season. Boerne would not quit and scored twice more to regain a three goal lead.

With 6:30 remaining in the 3rd quarter, senior Lucas Willingham won a face off and took the ball down the field, where he hit Parker on a breakaway for Parker’s fourth goal of the game. Soon after, senior Deacon Ivey caused a turnover and senior Dylan Reeves scooped the ground ball, taking it down the field. He found junior AJ Deer who hit Parker on the assist, with Parker putting it in for his fifth goal of the game.

With the score 7-8 and three minutes remaining in the third quarter, the referee blew the play dead when senior Truman Householder was pushed down from behind. On the restart, in an act of poetic justice, Householder took it straight to the cage and scored to tie the game 8-8.
