Varsity Basketball: Reagan Raiders beat Tigers

After attaining a rank of 16thin the state, the Tigers immediately showed they could not stand the prosperity by promptly losing to a good Reagan team and dropped their standing. No problem, the only important standing is in district and the Tigers will have to earn it as they go back through a fairly tough second half schedule after defeating Crockett 63-38 to finish up the first half at 6-1. In another big game, LBJ outlasted Reagan to finish the first half tied with Dripping Springs. Following the leaders are Reagan 5-2, McCallum 4-3, Crockett 3-4, Travis 2-5, Lockhart 2-5, Lanier 0-7.

As mentioned last week, the Reagan Raiders lay in wait for the DS Tigers and ambushed them 60-41. A poor shooting night for the Tigers triggered the loss. They were 7-28 from the two and 7-22 beyond the arc.

The Travis game had quarters where each team had difficulty scoring but in the end it was all Tigers in the 58-33 win. A fast start gave the Tigers an 18-9 advantage after one. Suddenly, the Tigers found the basket difficult to hit and before they knew it they were holding a slim 22-21 lead at the break. That woke up the Tigers and it was off to the races with a 16-2 quarter and doubled Travis in the final stanza for the easy victory.

It was a very entertaining game with Crockett. It was fast-paced, good pressure defenses and obvious both teams were well-coached and well-disciplined in their skills. Both teams gave maximum effort throughout the game. The difference ended up being the Tigers defense that would not let the Cougar offense penetrate the paint and forced outside, lower percentage shots. Another plus was the Tigers battle on the offensive boards that allowed second and third attempts to make the baskets.

Enzo Arnold would be the impetus to start the game as he scored six of the first eight to help a 10-2 beginning. Crockett would close the gap to 12-9 after one. Alema Louis would take up the slack in the second with seven to take a 35-16 lead at the break. Crockett kept the scoring pressure up in the third to cut into the lead after three 48-34. Connor Parks scored eight of his points in the final quarter as play was more deliberate.
