Tiger Varsity Basketball in rough phases

LBJ arrived late and the Tigers were ready for the ambush.

District play has become more unpredictable than first believed for varsity boys basketball. The Tigers (7-2) have been through some pretty rough phases and it almost put them in a really bad place. They have managed to win two close games to keep their heads above water. Going into the playoffs, with the strength of the bi-district, it is important to earn the first or second seed. They have hung onto their second place spot with a 54-46 win over Crockett, a 52-21 win over Navarro and a big upset 55-48 victory over state-ranked and first place LBJ. The first place goal will be someone else's to decide as the Tigers have split with LBJ. Five games remain and the Tigers two most serious opponents will be played at their home.

Crockett was a team that looked to be easy. They were near the bottom of the pile. The Tigers came out with their usual great first quarter performance and led 19-5 after one. Then the slide as the Cougars starting clawing their way out. It was 27-19 at the break. It was all locked up at 33 after three and was tied at 44 in regulation. Fortunately, DS fired back up to enjoy a 10-2 OT for a 54-46 win.

LBJ arrived late and the Tigers were ready for the ambush. The Tigers decided to pack in the paint with a zone defense, forcing the Jaguars to shoot contested threes. Their accuracy was off all night as they made only two all night. Meanwhile the Tigers were taking advantage to make it a 16-5 after one. Thanks to a streak of threes by Jayden Guevara DS took their largest lead of the night at 28-7. LBJ showed a little life late to make it 31-12 at the break.

A running game is LBJ's forte and they were able to get it going in the third. A pressing game all over the place, showed the Tigers lack of handling the situation by turning the ball over seven times and allowing LBJ to narrow the gap to 34-29 after three. After a quick basket to start the fourth, it looked like the Tigers might be in trouble but they circled the wagons. LBJ's inaccuracy returned and the Tigers' spotty free throw shooting (13-23) was just enough to keep the Jaguars at bay and take a very important step to the playoffs.
