Tiger Basketball held off McCallum Knights

It was a big night as the Tigers boys varsity basketball team was trying to rebound from a two-game losing streak. The Tigers held off a determined Mc-Callum Knight team to hold onto their second place tie in district and get their coveted 20th win for the season. When the smoke had cleared, DS was looking at a 62-51 victory. With three games remaining the top four in District 25-5A are LBJ 10-1, DS 8-3, Reagan 8-3, McCallum 7-4. District 26-5A leaders are SA Wagner 13-0, Boerne Champion 10-3, SA Harlandale 9-4, Kerrville Tivy 8-5.

It was not a good time for the Tigers basketball team to have two starters out due to sickness. They were trying to hold down the second place spot and stay close to the front-runner. Unfortunately they were up against an improving Lockhart squad looking to be spoilers. When the final second ticked off the clock, the Lions had indeed spoiled the night by defeating the Tigers 59-55 in their own house.

It turned in to a very fastpaced game and when the officiating let the players aggressive nature go, it became even more fast-paced. The game stayed close all night and went down to the fourth quarter for a conclusion. During the game there would be 15 lead changes and 11 ties. In the end it would be the crucial eight consecutive free throws to finish the game.

As much as the two missing starters probably hurt the overall result, the fact is the Tigers have enough depth to have quality replacements. The Tigers got off to a 5-0 start but Lockhart fought back getting an 8-6 lead before the Tigers ended the quarter with a 15-13 advantage with Trace Young and Tyler Smith having the hot hands.

The battle surged on in the second. After three ties and seven lead changes, nothing changed as the Tigers held onto their two-point lead at the break 25-23. A threepoint play by Young gave the Tigers a 28-23 lead but the Tigers could not take advantage as the Lions kept pushing and forcing the ball. At the 2.18 mark DS had a 36-31 lead but Lockhart went on a 7-0 run and got the lead back. A 3-point play by Lockhart with four seconds remaining turned the tables, broke the tie and put the Lions ahead 41-38.

At the 4.58 mark, the final tie, 47-47, took place. Shortly thereafter, the Lions got a basket and never gave up the lead. The Tigers hung in but could only get within one a couple of times. Lockhart held them off with the free throws. Lockhart led 59-52 with 10 seconds left and allowed an uncontested three to make it look better.

Vs Lockhart: Young 17, Louis 12, Xavier Phillips 11, Smith 8, Ben Bondurant 3, Kyle Rioux 2, Colin DeWitt
