Sports Opinion: Random Musings

Well sports fans, I am getting the same feeling I got during the spring sports seasons. The powers that be are back to dangling that carrot just out of reach when it comes to having fall seasons. Yes, everyone would like to go back to pre-COVID days and ignore the present situation but it is simply not going away until there is a vaccine. That is predicted to not happen until sometime in 2021. All of this calls for a huge amount of patience, a trait that many Americans have proven time and time again they are lacking. Ironically, the very people one would expect to be doing everything they can to be able to play are the very ones failing to follow the accepted steps to reduce the possibility of getting the virus. I prefer to follow the advice of those who have spent their entire career studying such things. Athletes are asked to sacrifice for the good of the team by their coaches, who have spent their careers studying their trade, so that should easily crossover to the area of our health as well. Small price to pay. We can force-feed sport seasons, but we know the virus will still be with us and it will be interesting how teams will look during the season as the infected and exposed have to be dealt with day by day and game to game. No doubt the sports world will be turned on its head for the duration of this setback.

Dripping Springs ISD is forming an Alumni Association. That is certainly a good thing and I wish it all the success. My hometown has one and although I have subscribed to Classmates, Inc. as a way of keeping up with my schoolmates and former students, it is a little harder to keep up with the happenings of those through this medium. A local association allows one to inquire at a central location and get needed information so much easier. Plus, the association can get updates to the members and apprise them of things they may not realize--a chance to extend Tiger Pride. Dripping Springs has a long history of interesting alumni.

With this project underway, it might lead to another that would be nice. That would be to have a Hall of Honor to recognize deserving students that accomplished over and above during their stay at DSISD. Coming from my sports background, the first thought is Athletics but there is no reason other areas of the curriculum could not be so honored. There are schools I know that have these, but it is my understanding there is much work that has to go into this to set the standards for attaining these honors, but worth the time and effort. Nevertheless, it is an outstanding way to honor our past students and give present ones another target to shoot at while they are attending. In its long history, Dripping Springs has had some very outstanding students contribute to its history.

The other day I was mildly chastised (in good humor) by a reader for having dropped the sports history column just when we were getting to the decade he played in. I had no real intention of dropping it entirely but needed a small break. I will try to pick it up again next week. It’s always good to know someone is reading the material and your work is not in vain.
