Running the bases: DSHS softball, baseball
The Dripping Springs softball team breezed through the first half of district without opposition as they went through undefeated.
There appear to be no barriers to a district championship for the Lady Tigers, who are 234, 8-0. In the last two games, the Lady Tigers shut out second place Del Valle (3-0) and Anderson (17-0) High Schools. Shutout pitching and big bats have made it look easy.
Del Valle was previously undefeated in league play and gave the Lady Tigers the best game so far. DSHS scored single runs in the first, third and fifth innings, and pitching took care of the rest. Getting the eleven hits were Kristen Zeman (2), Taylor Anderson (2), Jordan Cox (2), Kate Tressler (2), Jai-Lynn Flores (2) and Linan Scott.
The game against Anderson was not much of a competition. It was a run-rule, no-hit five innings with the Lady Tigers scoring three in the first and continuing to add to that in the third, fourth and fifth innings. Haiden Anderson had the big bat as she produced four extra-base hits and five RBIs as she had three doubles and one home run. Others getting to pad their batting stats from the 21 hits were Flores (3, HR), T. Anderson (3), Cox (3, HR), Zeman (2), Scott (2), Erica Kanetzky, Ashtyn Owens, Tressler and Attie Lux (2B).
District has been a little trickier for the Tigers, who have found themselves in fifth place with a 3-3 record.
In the series with Johnson High School, the first game ended up being a tough 2-3 loss. Pesky triples turned out to be the deciders in this game. In the third inning, Hays was able to use a single and a triple to cut the Tigers lead in half, but it was the fatal sixth inning that did the Tigers in. Tiger pitcher Mahoney got the first two batters out when an error and walk prolonged the inning and led to two unearned runs when the next batter tripled. The Tigers could not climb back into the lead in the seventh.
The stats for the second game was not available at press time, but we do know that Johnson scored a run in the bottom of the seventh to win the game 8-7.
