Rebels give Tiger Football all they could handle

Game Summary:

Buda Hays 35, Dripping Springs 34

Hays blocked Dripping Springs' game-tying extra-point attempt with 10 seconds left in the fourth quarter to secure a 35-34 win at Bob Shelton Stadium in Buda on Friday.

The Rebels (2-0) and Tigers (1-1) battled back-and-forth throughout the game.

Hays went ahead 35-28 late in the fourth quarter when senior quarterback Xavier Martinez scored on a 1-yard run.

Dripping Springs drove down the field looking to even the score.

Tiger senior quarterback Tanner Prewitt connected with senior wide receiver Parker Alford on a 3-yard touchdown pass to bring Dripping Springs to within 35-34.

But the blocked extra-point attempt sealed the game for Hays.

Dripping Springs hosts New Braunfels Canyon on Friday at 7:30 p.m., while Hays has the week off.

Carl Wait Article:

Coming into this season it was a good bet that if the Tigers were going to lose a game it would be in their first three. When they got past Kerrville, that left only Hays and Canyon as the major threats. There was little doubt the Rebels would give the Tigers all they could handle. The game disappointed no one until the final seconds ticked away and the Tigers had dropped the 35-34 decision for their first and probably only loss. New Braunfels Canyon will come to town Friday night and will have to take on a riled up Tiger squad. Kickoff will be at 7:30pm.

Hays showed confidence in their offense by winning the toss and electing to take the ball. They play old school ball by lining up and running the ball right at you using deception as the key. It would take them 11 plays and going for it on two fourth down plays to go the 69 yards. A 23 run put them on the board. 7-0.

Defense could not turn back the offenses and the first five possessions ended in scores. The Tigers used a balanced attack to march 67 yards in 8 plays. The final 42 came on a Tanner Prewit pass to Parker Alford, who took the ball away from the defender around the 20 and scampered in from there. Nathan Koch tied the game with his EP. Hays quickly regained the lead when a back broke up the middle on the first play and outran the Tigers secondary to go ahead 14-7. The Tigers returned the favor when they climaxed a 5-play, 75 drive with a Prewit to Enzo Arnold pass for 33 to deadlock the score at 14. That would end the first quarter.

It would take Hays another 11 plays but they would take the lead early in the second and hold it until the half. It would be a 3 run to climax the 72 drive. Also included their first pass attempt. The Tigers would come back to hold the ball for 12 plays but a QB sneak was turned back at the one. A golden opportunity opened on the next play when Hays passed from the one into the hands of Lane Dominey who returned it 36 for an apparent score. A penalty gave the ball back to Hays. Eight plays later Cole Cavender snagged one that did count. Hays stopped the next Tiger drive with an interception and the score remained 21-14 at half.

The Tigers tied the game on their opening drive by going 75. The final 57 came on a Prewit to Arnold pass and run. Coleman Chapman toed the EP. Hays coughed up the ball at the Tiger 30 when Dominey fell on the ball. The tip drill came in handy for Hays when a Rebel defender was the recipient and returned it 46 yards to set up a score for Hays to go ahead 28-21. After an exchange of possessions, Jake Cox broke up the middle, survived several poor tackles and dove into the endzone to complete the 78 run to bring the game back into a 28-28 tie and set up the exciting fourth.

DS dodged a bullet when a Hays back fumbled the ball as he was about to score and the ball scooted out the back of the endzone for a touchback. Hays did not miss out on the next time as they would drive 80 yards in 8 plays, the last being a QB sneak from the one. 35-28. This left the Tigers 75 yards and 2.10 to work with. They would score on a 3 yard pass from Prewit to Alford, who again wrestled the ball away in the endzone with 8 seconds left. It looked for all the world there would be some overtime periods ahead. Not meant to be as an assignment was missed with a Rebel breaking cleanly up the middle to block the EP. Onside kick did not work. Game over.
