Lady Tigers wrap up basketball season with heartbreaking losses to Seguin, Tivy

A very inconsistent season in the shooting department and turnovers have robbed the Lady Tigers the opportunity to make the playoffs. Their final home game was against Seguin, and for six seniors it was their last ever home game. Unfortunately, an exciting rally in the fourth went for naught when the Lady Tigers fell one point short in OT, 49-48.

Seguin, who had upset the Lady Tigers in their first match, was determined to make it two. DS was just as determined to not let it happen. It was another slow opening quarter. Seguin made a basket to open scoring and Ally Beck would provide the lead with a three. Teagan Huslig got the lead back with another three. Seguin got the lead back at 7-6 with four minutes left. No one scored after that.

The second quarter was much the same with the half ending 16-15. Scoring picked up in the third and during the course of the quarter there were two ties and six lead changes. The biggest lead by DS all night came during this quarter 31-26 as it ended 31-28.

Then came the mindboggling fourth. Beck hit a basket to get back to 33-28. Then came a Seguin 12-0 run and looked game over at 33-40 with 2.37 remaining. Corbyn Davis popped a three, followed by another basket by Beck to get it to 40-38. Beck ripped another three to go ahead 41-40. With 25 seconds left Seguin took a 44-41 lead. Lady Tigers not done as Beck would rip a three with eight seconds to send the game into OT. A Seguin free throw with 28 seconds gave them the 49-48 advantage. Still not over as a Lady Matador missed two free throws with 3.5. However, DS got the rebound but could not negotiate the length of the court for a shot to give them the heart-breaking loss.

In the end the failure to control the boards was a major factor as the 11-25 from two and 8-22 from three were good numbers. It did not help that one of the leading scorers, Caroline Gamble, missed the game due to an injury. The other seniors were Beck, Davis, Huslig, Lilee McGinnis and Gesena Mitchhart.

Prior to the Seguin game the Lady Tigers took on the Lehman Lady Lobos. DS got off to a very good start and led 18-8 after one. It was a little closer at the break as DS controlled the score 30-18. Lehman came out in the third fired up and made a move as they trimmed the lead to 37-32. DS would turn it up a notch in the final stanza to take the 47-37 win.

In their final game of the season, the Lady Tigers travelled to Kerrville to take on Tivy. Tivy had already clinched fourth but another impetus for the Lady Tigers was to send off Coach Norris with a win over his alma mater. Tivy was playing much better ball of late than they had when DS beat them in the first round. The result was a 56-29 loss for DS to give the Lady Tigers a 7-9, 9-13 record. Tivy would come out strong, take a 17-9 margin after one and stretch it to 32-19 at the break. Although each team only scored six points each in the third, Tivy poured it on in the final stanza.

Vs Lehman: Davis 13, Beck 13, Ella Smith 8, Jordan Cox 7, Ashleigh Aksamit 4, Ainsley Ballard 2.

Vs Seguin: Beck 21, Cox 10, Huslig 7, Davis 3, McGinnis 3, Smith 2, Kierra O'Connor 2.

Vs Kerrville: No stats available at press time.
