Lady Tigers volleyball off to great start

Last year, the Dripping Springs High School volleyball team put together a 7-0 run in the playoffs to become the 2022 State 6A Champs. It seems they liked the streak so well, they decided to extend it into the 2023 season.

To date, the Dripping Springs Lady Tigers have put away twelve opponents on the court this season. More statistics will be forthcoming.

As usual, the Lady Tigers schedule includes as many top opponents as can be found as well as three top tournaments around. A regulation game consists of a best of five match to determine a winner. Tournament brackets are so big they shorten the games by declaring a team that reaches two wins first the winner. Sometimes, the finals day has regulation games.

The opening games were against Round Rock’s Westwood, Leander’s Rouse and Plugerville’s Hendrickson High Schools, all top programs in their districts. Westwood fell 0-3, but Rouse fought a little harder to lose 1-3. Hendrickson pushed the Lady Tigers to the limit, and Dripping Springs headed to Pearland with a 3-2 win, undefeated with a 3-0 record.

The Pearland tourney is usually one of the top tourneys in the state with outstanding competition. Still, Dripping Springs blew through their competitors and set their stamp on a return to the state tourney. The Lady Tigers took 2-0 victories over Atascocita, Joshua, Decatur, Barbers Hill, and Manvel High Schools, as well as St. John’s School. The second day, Pearland went down 2-1. Dallas’s Ursuline Academy fell 2-0 as did Oklahoma City’s Mount St. Mary High School for the tourney title.

Last Tuesday — Aug. 8 — the Lady Tigers played Cedar Ridge High School. They have now headed for a weekend tourney in New Braunfels called the Fraulein Volleyfest Invitational. The first district game will be at Del Valle High School on Aug. 22.
