Lady Tigers Basketball head to bi-district

The Lady Tigers basketball team played their last home game of the season, celebrating with Parents Night. It was a good night to celebrate as the District Champion Lady Tigers blew away the McCallum Lady Knights 74-27. They only have Reagan (last Tuesday) remaining to finish with a 23-13, 13-1 record. Then on to the playoffs where they are slated to play San Antonio Wagner. Tentatively, the Bidistrict game will be played at Lehman early next week. Check school website for details.

The Lady Tigers basketball team cleared their last major hurdle to winning the district title with a 34-27 low-scoring win over Lockhart. The Lady Lions battling for second place gave the Lady Tigers all they could handle and even a scare for much of the game. The scorer may have nodded off in the first half. Lockhart held onto a 9-3 advantage after one and then the roles were reversed as the half ended with the score tied at eleven. DS was able to score in doublefigures in the second half as they eased ahead 24-20 after three.

After a pregame ceremony honoring the families of each of the varsity players, there was another pleasant surprise. It was a magnanimous gesture that shows what really matters in high school sports. Before the game the coaches had agreed to a way to honor Julia Graham, a Lady Tiger senior. She was the returning leading scorer and had already set a couple of school records in previous years but had lost her senior year to a knee injury just prior to the season. It was agreed on the opening tip McCallum would be allowed an uncontested layup and in return, Julia would be allowed an uncontested layup on her end. Mission accomplished successfully. It is so heartbreaking to see an athlete lose their senior year but so heartwarming to witness a memory like this one.

For a while it looked like those baskets might be the only one's scored. The senior lineup finally got in groove and the pace picked up thanks to a 10-point outburst by Emily Kotrola. It is refreshing to see a player understand the mechanics of accuracy using the backboard on “in the paint” shots. She would hit 9 of 10 on the night. The quarter would end 22-7.

Another five would play the second and actually matched the first quarter scoring for a 44-14 lead at the break. Caroline Gamble had a pair of threes. The second half followed the first half strategy of playing everyone. Each quarter had the Lady Tigers scoring fifteen points. It was 59-27 after three with DS shutting out McCallum in the final quarter.
