Lady Tiger Basketball struggles

The Lady Tigers basketball team continues to struggle with scoring problems as they prepare for the start of district play. As mentioned before, even prior to the season, the Lady Tigers saw their leading scorer, Julia Graham, go down with a knee injury and those 442 points last year would make a lot of difference this year. On top of that, one of their leading scorers this year, Caroline Gamble, was hit in the face with a ball during the San Marcos tourney, putting her out of action for a couple of weeks. Good health and better shooting percentages will certainly help as the Lady Tigers have seen their record dip to 3-6. In watching games, the same old malady seems to stay with the shooting problems. Finishing the easy points. The coaches are certainly working on drills to improve on it.

DS went to Austin to play Austin High. It was a game of two halves. A slow scoring half found the Lady Tigers trailing 31-9 but the basket got larger in the second as they scored 16 in the third and 26 in the fourth to rally for a closer 58-51 loss.

Then onto the San Marcos tourney where 44 seemed to be a popular winning number. The scoring continued as DS took on San Antonio South. Double-digit scoring in each quarter by the Lady Tigers, along with mostly single-digit scoring by SS left a big 70-29 margin of victory. North Forney was next up and the Lady Tigers needed some of their first game points as they fell 44-27.

Concordia pressed the issue for a while before falling to DS 44-39. Almost a complete flip in the game with San Marcos as the Lady Rattlers hung on for a 44-37 win. An 18-3 deficit in the first quarter got the Lady Tigers behind the eight ball and could not recover as Cedar Ridge kept adding to the advantage through the third for a final 49-32 verdict.

It was another slow start for both teams as DS took on New Braunfels Canyon in an overtime 35-32 loss. After four minutes the score was only 2-2. A three basket from Carson Hall and later a 3-point play by Donovan Kennedy gave the Lady Tigers an 8-2 lead after one. Four quick layup opportunities gave NBC a sudden 10-8 lead. The lead changed back and forth with Hall hitting a late basket to get DS within two (17-15) at half. The third quarter had the scorekeeper dozing off. Donovan would hit a three to even the score after three 22-22. It was more or less ditto for the fourth. NBC hit a free throw with a minute left to tie the score at 27 and despite chances, neither team could add to it. Looked like NBC was going to take charge of OT with a 6-0 run. NBC got careless in the last minute of play, with Ally Beck and Donovan getting five of those back with 45 seconds left. Again, many chances to have a victory that did not materialize. For the night DS was 9-28 from two and 3-17 from three. Eleven turnovers did not help.
