Lady Tiger Basketball in District play

When the season began, it was pretty well determined the district race would consist of only two games. After the first half of district has transpired, that prediction was only further enhanced. The Lady Tigers (6-1) lost to Crockett (7-0) 28-32 in the second game of play. Otherwise the Lady Tigers have outscored the other six 417-122. The past week was indicative as DS had no competition in disposing of McCallum 68-9 and Reagan 66-11.

It was surprising that Mc-Callum, a school that usually has competing programs in each sport could not muster even that, including no freshman team. DS would shut them out (17-0) in the first quarter and it got little better by half as it ended 35-3. It was upped to 53-7 after three.

Reagan only suited up six and had no freshman team either. They were on defense most of the night while DS was getting off 61 shots and many of the points coming on offensive rebounds. It would be 11-0 before Reagan would hit a three at the 5.14 mark. The quarter ended 19-3. Reagan would not score again until 3.19 left in the half. Meanwhile the Lady Tigers had added another nineteen. Another three at 3.25 broke the monotony of DS scoring as they pushed ahead 57-8. Reagan had a three-point play with a minute left to avert a shutout quarter. A dozen Lady Tigers would get in the scoring column.

The big moment in the Reagan game came before the start of the game. The 1993-94 state championship team was honored with a rousing welcome. Eight of the twelve team members were in attendance, plus the two managers, head coach, Jerry English, his wife and team scorekeeper, Barbara, and assistant coaches Anne Cook and Leslie Jones. A very good turnout for this important event.

Back to district. The Lady Tigers will encounter that second game tomorrow night at Crockett. The Lady Cougars are ranked in the top ten of 5A but that may not mean much as the Lady Tigers dropped their previous decision by being outscored 13-3 in the final quarter. There is no other competition in district. The championship rides on this game.
