Lady Tiger Basketball 3-3 record as approach district play

Article Image Alt Text
The one skill the Lady Tigers have lacked in games to date is that of obtaining rebounds which leads to more chances to score or keeps the other team from getting their second chances.

In their last two games the Lady Tiger varsity took on teams from New Braunfels and in each case New Braunfels got the upper hand in wins. New Braunfels Canyon came away with a 47-39 victory and then New Braunfels High came to DS and drove away with a 51-49 OT win. They presently have a 3-3 record as they approach district play. They were in a tourney this past weekend and last Tuesday DS opened district play against Travis.

The game with NB was filled with sloppy play and streaks by both teams as no one was able to take control of the game when they held good leads. The one skill the Lady Tigers have lacked in games to date is that of obtaining rebounds which leads to more chances to score or keeps the other team from getting their second chances. NB was continually getting to the ball first while the Lady Tigers were slow to react. In today's world of shooting threes, the long bounces are going to require some chasing and not just standing and jumping for the ball. Rebounding is an instinctive skill to get there first.

In addition, the shooting prowess on this night was lacking. From the two-range it was a respectable 12-30 but from three it was rather an atrocious 4-23. Free throws was 13-23. When you suffer a two-point OT loss, then a slight improvement in any area would surely make the difference. Many of the shots were of the hurried nature, which lessens accuracy in most cases. Many of the Lady Tigers points came on breakaway layups. DS produced 18 turnovers but thankfully NB reciprocated.

The teams would swap leads six times as a buzzer-beater three gave NB a 10-9 lead after one. A 6-0 run to begin the second gave NB a 16-9 advantage. A 9-2 run by DS tied the game at 18 with 40 seconds left but NB responded to go up 22-18 at the half.

The third quarter belonged to NB as DS could only muster a two and two threes while NB would push their lead to 39-24 before Caroline Gamble's three with ten seconds left got it to 39-27. NB decided to get sloppy and not make good decisions in taking care of the ball. The Lady Tigers were able to steal the ball numerous times and converted to scores. With 2.38 left DS knotted the score at 44 and twenty seconds later took their first lead since late in the first quarter. NB would hit two critical free throws to tie it at 46 and send the game into OT. The four-minute period went fast. DS would go ahead 49-48 with 1.38 remaining but a three at the 50-second mark and then a blocked layup, plus possession at 30 seconds sealed the deal.

Vs Canyon: Corbyn Davis 17, Avery Johnson 8, Ashleigh Aksamit 7, Teagan Huslig 4, Mallari O'Neal 2, Gamble 1.

Vs NB: Gamble 18, Kline Stafford 7, Johnson 6, Huslig 6, Davis 5, Carson Hall 4, Lilee McGinnis 3.
