Lacrosse wins big over Vandegrift

Tigers now eye Lake Travis
It didn’t take long for the packed house to see what this 2019 Dripping Springs team was groomed to do.

Lacrosse Coach Bill Cafferata assembled a tough out of town schedule to ready his squad for the District games that really matter. The Tigers had a perfect 2-0 record in District play but were 3-3 overall with losses to some powerhouse teams out of Dallas. Friday night the Tigers faced a top-ranked Vandegrift Vipers team that came into Dripping Springs with an impressive four game winning streak.

It didn’t take long for the packed house to see what this 2019 Dripping Springs team was groomed to do. The Tigers scored :42 seconds into the contest with a goal from junior captain Charles Pouland and went up 2-0 when junior Cristian Reno scored at the 7:42 mark. Vandegrift would answer the early attack with goals by Rutgers University commit Robert Almand, but his firepower wasn’t enough to stop the Tigers. Pouland ended the game with four goals and was the KDRP player of the game. Sophomore Alex Schlab was 8 of 17 against the best face-off tandem in the State and was awarded the coveted team hammer for gritty play. Junior Nic Austin had a goal and five assists while Reno added three more assists. Brayden Glass and Charles Hunt had two goals each. Senior Connor Mogen, a Texas State commit, continued to dominate in goal with 15 saves.

The win against Vandegrift was a big one for the Tigers. Four teams will make the Central Texas playoffs. Westlake, whom has won the title the past ten years is assumed to be a shoe in. However, the last three spots are a toss up according to lacrosse experts. Prior to Drip beating Vandegrift, they saw a virtual tie between Lake Travis, Austin High, Vandegrift and Dripping Springs fighting for three spots.

The Central Texas District race gets more heated on Thursday Night at Dripping Springs when Lake Travis comes to town for a showdown at 8PM. The Tigers have never beaten the Cavs in a Division 1 game. A loss makes every game important. A win assures the Tigers of a spot in the playoffs.

Junior Varsity ran their spotless record to 7-0 with a win over Vandegrift 7-2 on Friday. They beat the Bowie Varsity team 16-0 on Tuesday.

Tune into KDRP to hear play-by-play with Kenny and Kirby Wottrich on Thursday at 8PM. Game admission is free.
