DSHS Golden Anniversary

Fifty years ago, there was another Tiger team that strived to do what everyone else does when they play a season--win a district championship. The 1970 Tigers did accomplish this and now are celebrating their golden anniversary of this feat.

The nucleus of this team also played on the 1968 championship team. The 1969 team was the last year in Class B and primed to repeat, but some critical injuries slowed the process. The deciding game was with Bertram. This was a hardfought game that ended in a 6-6 tie. An unfortunate play occurred when a Tiger back breaking into the clear for an apparent TD had the ball slip from his grasp. In those days, ties were decided by the number of penetrations inside the 20. Bertram had one more and went to the playoffs.

We two-platooned. That, with a small 1969 senior class, left the 1970 Tigers with plenty of returning experience and a bad taste in the mouth from the near miss of the year before. It was also an unknown, as Dripping Springs had moved up to Class A and a new set of opponents. With two last-second wins, the Tigers won nine regularseason games, the first time in 11-man football.

The Tigers opened with a hard-fought 7-0 win over Granger. Next up was Pflugerville, a team that ultimately went undefeated before losing in the state final. DS pushed inside the five four times without scoring and dropped the 28-0 contest. Marion was in their first year of playing football and were manhandled 58-0 and this was followed by a 19-0 whitewashing of Lampasas “B”. The final non-district game was at Hutto. The Tigers had to fight back from a 14-0 halftime deficit. With about a minute to play, trailing 21-20 and facing a fourth and ten from the 21, John Murray made the quick pitch call look good by scoring on the play and giving the Tigers the 28-21 victory.

This brought on district play. The first game was against a struggling Johnson City team and they went down 67-0. Comfort could not withstand the onslaught of offense and were swamped 60-32. Bandera slowed the scoring but still lost 22-0. The right to the playoffs came at the home of long-time rival Blanco. The Tigers found themselves trailing 18-13 late in the game. They drove down to the four before a holding penalty put them back 15. The fourth down pass drew an interference call in the endzone with 19 seconds left putting the ball on the one. Cole Bonnett plunged in from there for the final 20-18 score. Sabinal certainly could not get in the way of an outright title as they succumbed 61-14.

The Bi-district game with Jourdanton was played before a standing room only crowd at Pleasanton. The Tiger offense was unable to solve the Jourdanton defense but only allowed a TD in each of the first two quarters to fall behind 12-0. Whatever chance the Tigers had was mostly taken away when Murray was injured on the last play of the half. The final was 34-0. Jourdanton would go on to lose to Pflugerville 28-0.

As one might expect, the Tigers reaped many rewards for their outstanding season. Six senior players earned first team all-district honors (district did not select second teams). Pat Lyle, the largest player selected at 6'1, 226, dominated his position at nose guard. He was also named to the Super Centex team, Class A All-Centex and Class A All-State first team. He garnered 76 points and trailed the top point-getter by one. He was also a Class B All-State third team honoree in 69. He is still the only Tiger to attain first team all-state status and his 211 total tackles participated in that year still remains the school record.

Joe Williamson was an 180 offensive end. He was also named to the Class A All-Centex squad and third team Class A All-State. He was named to the Class B All-State second team in 69. He set several receiving and punting records.

John Hasty Lee “Meatball” Murray, a 143 running back, was certainly the most colorful character on the team. In addition to All-District, gained Class A All-Centex honorable mention. He left Tigerland holding 16 school records including single-season and career rushing totals that survived over 30 years and some are still standing.

Chuck Modgling was the smallest player named to the team as a 127 offensive tackle. He was slated to be a LB but had a severe knee injury at the first scrimmage in 1969. The decision to protect the knee led to right tackle. He was tough as a boot and much of Murray's yardage went his way.

Jay Lindsey was a 169 middle linebacker. He had a high IQ and big heart, which made up for his lack of speed. He was able to fill any holes that Lyle was unable to take care of. Matt Allen, a defensive back, was the second smallest at 128.

Gaining all-district honorable mention were seniors Cole Bonnett, RB, Randy Spence ,E, Monty McNair, OL, and Cecil McIntyre, DB. Unfortunately, health problems took the lives of Modgling, Lindsey, Allen and McNair much too early.
