Varsity Boys Basketball Results

After a two-week hiatus because of the Covid quarantine, the Tigers revised their schedule and have tried to move on down the road. They were able to reschedule their game with Lake Travis before engaging in the district schedule. As we have mentioned before, the Tigers like to take on top competition to get them ready. Lake Travis was certainly that on this night.

Over the years past, the games have usually been really close contests with only a few points dividing the two. Lake Travis, who had also endured a two-week layoff had the advantage of playing a game prior to playing the Tigers. It showed. The final was 62-48.

It was a fast-paced game throughout, with bodies flying all over the place as they went to the basket. The Cavaliers bolted out to a quick 7-2 lead before the Tigers started to claw back and make it a game. Somewhere around the 13- 13 score of the first quarter, LT called a timeout. I don't know what was said, but LT came out with a shooting vengeance and could not miss their threes to finish the quarter on a 14-2 run to own the scoreboard 27- 15 after one. The onslaught continued into the second quarter. Aidan Bailey's hothand at the free throw line kept it from being a little more one-sided as the teams went to the locker rooms at half with the Tigers trailing 46-25.

It is not unusual for the second half of games like this to have a change in demeanor. The winning team will lose a little focus and not be as intense while the other will figure they have nothing to lose, and at the least, will match the efforts of their opponent. This mostly happened as the scoring in the third slowed down as the quarter finished with the score being 56-34. The Tigers were able to make a move on the Cavaliers in the final stanza but when you have a 22-point deficit to make up, it usually takes more time than you have left. And so it was with this game.

Bailey had the most consistent attack for the night with his 17 points- -with Che Guevara close behind with 15. Others contributing with points were Greyson Jones 5, Tony Parra 4, Max Stewart 4 and Jude Donovan 3.

Tigers Get Past Bi-District

The last two years the Dripping Springs Tigers have been unable to get past the Bi-district round even though they went in with the number one seed. This year, the COVID-19 formula, even though a titleholder, the Tigers fell to a number three seed and it meant they had to play the number two seed of that same district. This year they had better luck with the new formula as they held on to defeat the Georgetown Eagles 49-42 and a berth in the Area game opposite the Manvel Mavericks.

This game had all the trappings of last week's exciting contest with Seguin. The weather was again perfect as it was played in the afternoon at Georgetown's stadium. The outcome literally came down to the last play of the game. The Eagles brought their vaunted running attack with them and dared the Tigers to stop them. On the other hand, they had made the decision that Cameron O'Banan would not beat them and covered him like a blanket throughout the game. What the Eagles did not account for was the fact DS had a running attack as well with Preston Alford and other good receivers that Austin Novosad could get the ball to.

Over the course of the last half dozen years, the Tigers have been involved in games that have made Yogi Berra's observation “It Ain't Over 'Til It's Over,” a correct reality. This game would be no different and it means a lot to success when a team never quits trying even though it might look a little bleak at the time. The game also proves that it is far better to have played games leading up to. Georgetown had not played in several weeks while the Tigers had. It showed in the early sharpness of each team.

DS took the opening KO and marched 75 yards in five plays. The big play was a 45 run by O'Banan to put it on the 8 and Alford took it from there. Coleman Chapman made it 7-0. Following a punt, the Tigers faced 90 yards. No big deal. Eight plays later Novosad found O'Banan in the EZ from 15 out. 14-0. On the first play of the second quarter, the Eagles got on board with a 33FG. 14-3. Facing a 97 drive after an O'Banan punt, the Eagles popped a 50 TD run to narrow the gap to 14-9.

Alford would return the favor when he broke for a 62 run to make it 20-9. Georgetown used two QB keepers to cover the 59 yards, bringing the score to 20-17. The Tigers wasted no time either as they moved the 70 yards with Alford, taking it in from the seven to make it 27-17 at the half.

Georgetown got it back to 27-24 on their first drive. The Tigers answered with a 14 jaunt by Alford to get it back to 10 for a score of 34- 24. Another 33 FG and a 55 run tied the game at 34-34. Early in the fourth, Alford ran it in from the 11 to regain the lead 41-34. The Eagles came right back with an 11 pass and converted the two point EP to gain their first lead of the night 42-41.

Eight minutes, fifty-seven seconds was left in the game. The Tigers started off from the 34 and 14 plays later they found themselves on the 11 and facing a major decision with several minutes remaining. They chose a fourth and one run over the FG. O'Banan was stuffed at the ten, short of the first down. It looked a little bleak, but with timeouts and two fumbles that took away a chance to make a fatal first down for Georgetown, the Tigers forced a punt and took over at the 36. Six plays later, a Novosad to Garon Duncan 11 yard pass, plus O'Banan's two point conversion put the Eagles ahead 49-42 with 48 seconds remaining. Amazingly, the Eagles moved the ball to the 12 with two seconds left. The pass to the open Eagles back in the EZ was just barely out of reach or it would have been OT. That's over. So, on to Area.

Team stats (DS first): First downs 27-19; Rushing 41-289, 31-261; Passing 234-265; Passes 21-33-0, 19-30-0; Punts 3-48.3, 5-36.4; Penalties 9-60, 8-77; Fumbles lost 1-2, 0-2.
