Dripping Springs Cross Country State Meet Results

In one of the most competitive state meets ever, the Lady Tigers put together a very strong effort to finish fourth in a field of 13 teams. As Coach Marisa Tuzzi commented in a video interview with William Grundy, the makeup of this team made her believe it was the best team she had coached at Dripping Springs. This is saying a lot, when you know this 19-year veteran at Dripping Springs has coached seven district championships, 17 regional appearances and 10 state qualifiers. Often the case in sports, it seems when you have your best team, someone else always has their best as well. She lamented about it happening against Boerne Champion over the years. Boerne Champion, the defending state champion moved back into the Lady Tigers’ district this year, nudging the Lady Tigers out of first place. However, at regionals, the Lady Tigers would return the favor by taking the title. This left state as the rubber match. Two other good teams muscled their way in between the two as Boerne Champion was able to defend their title.

There has never been any quit in this group of Lady Tigers as they had to negotiate, like others, a season like no other because of COVID-19. As an example, the recognized leader of the pack, Maddie Livingston, had used every ounce of her being during the race to the point of passing out as she crossed the finish line. Kate Ginther quietly put in the work as she stepped up mightily at the regional and state meets. She saved her best for last in the state meet. The accomplishments of this team mirrored the 2015 group with the exception of winning district. The 2003 team finished third in state for the highest ranked finish of any school team.

Caleb Lopez, the lone Tiger qualifying for state, had the misfortune of losing a shoe at the one mile mark but still persevered to finish 15th with a time of 15.26. The state meet was held at Settlers Park in Round Rock.

5A girls standings: Boerne Champion 76, Grapevine 89, Colleyville Heritage 91, Dripping Springs 103, Highland Park 117, Canyon Randall 149, Lucas Lovejoy 153, Georgetown 154, Frisco Wakeland 229, Amarillo 287, Austin LASA 288, College Station 293, Magnolia West 316.

Lady Tiger Volleyball Forges Ahead

One down and one more to go for the Lady Tigers volleyball team. The immediate aim of the team is to redeem their double losses to district foes NB Canyon and Alamo Heights on their way to the state tourney. They disposed of Medina Valley at the Area level and then took on Alamo Heights at Regional Quarterfinals and knew that defeating another good team three times in a row is difficult at best. DS made it tougher than that, as they shut them out 3-0. Now, it is on to Canyon. First, they have to take on McAllen this past Monday/Tuesday and if all goes as expected, they will take on Canyon Friday for the right to earn a state berth.

Tigers Football Team Clinches Share of Title

After downing the Hays Johnson Jaguars 44-24, the Tigers are one game away from another outright district championship. Thursday night will have the Tigers hosting the Seguin Matadors while celebrating homecoming. A win by the Tigers will make it an outright, but a loss will make it a shared title with Seguin and possibly Canyon.

It was a cool, wet and windy afternoon as the Tigers took on the Jaguars. The young Jaguars appear to have qualified for the playoffs in their first year of having a school, and possess no seniors on the team. Nevertheless, they should be licking their lips when thinking about next year as well.

The Tigers continued to lean heavily on their skilled people to produce the scoring and they came through. Austin Novosad tossed five more TD passes and the defense shut down Johnson for most of the first half. DS wasted little time getting on the scoreboard as Novosad hit Preston Alford on the fourth play and he toted the old pigskin 41 yards. Coleman Chapman split the uprights and it was 7-0 with only 1.03 having elapsed. Shelby Hudson would pilfer a pass and return it 41 yards that would lead to a 23 FG by Chapman. Alford would break off a 58 TD run in the second to make it 17-0. Johnson would put together a good drive to score with 31 seconds remaining to make it 17-7 at the half.

Johnson used that drive to spark themselves to a good second half and a couple of bad breaks kept the game from being even closer. They never quit giving their best, kept the Tigers on their toes and did not lose focus. Each team had to keep their starters in for the duration which makes it good for a team going into the playoffs.

Novosad hit Cameron O'Banan for an 11 TD to make it 24-7 after their first drive. Johnson came back to make it 24-14. The Tigers gave them a great opportunity with a short punt that set the Jaguars up at the Tigers 45. Instead, the first snap went over the QB's head and the ball acted as a greased pig contest, as it kept squirting out of people's grasp and by the time Wyatt Leschber captured the ball, it was on the Jaguars 19. The final nine covered on a Novosad-O'Banan pass, 31-14. Next possession, Jaguars went for it on a 4thand 1 from their 29 and were stuffed. A screen pass to Alford covered the final 14, bringing the score to 38-14.

Johnson had a nice drive that culminated in a 39 FG. Then drove for another TD, 38-24. They had a successful onside kick but the Tiger defense rose up to prevent a first down. Novosad hit Noah Lawyer for the final 20 TD. Bad snap prevented the EP. Hudson snared his second pass and returned it 30 to the three and the victory formation took care of the rest.
