Lady Tigers Volleyball Marches On

The Dripping Springs Lady Tigers volleyball team took on a former district nemesis, Cedar Park, in a bi-district matchup. Looking for a chance to get retribution ahead of their present district nemeses, NB Canyon and Alamo Heights, the Lady Tigers disposed of the Lady Wolves in three to move ahead to the area round of play. They played the Medina Valley match last Tuesday night. A win there will probably put them in a rematch with Alamo Heights this Friday or Saturday.

Vs Cedar Park (25-20, 25-16, 28-26): Kills (40): Mackenzie Plante 11, Karley Sledge 8, Annabelle Crowder 6, Madi Lund 5, Ava Williamson 5, Natalie Arnold 4, Morgan Van de Walle. Aces (4): Clara Martin 3, Nicole Herbert. Blks (4): Lund 2, Plante, Arnold. Digs (58): Herbert 12, Plante 12, Ryann Frontera 11, de Walle 5, Cecilia Guzaldo 5, Martin 3, Sledge 3, Lund 2, Crowder 2, Williamson. Assts (39): Frontera 21, de Walle 18. Ser Rec (49): Herbert 25, Plante 22, Guzaldo, Noelle Dominey.

Varsity Boys Basketball

As usual, Coach Craig Swannack likes to schedule a strong slate to give his teams the experience they need for the playoffs later in the season. Also, as usual, the Tigers acquit themselves quite well in the process. They opened with SA Brandeis and held on to win 51-47. Unfortunately, we have not been able to get the stats from that one. They returned home to play Rouse and Westlake.

At Brandeis, the Tigers found themselves in a battle from beginning to end. The Tigers held a 12-11 advantage after one. By the half, it had edged up to 21- 19. It became a dead heat after three 35-35 and left the decision of the final to occur in the fourth.

The first home game of the season paired the Tigers with the Rouse Raiders. This 58-53 win for the Tigers was close all the way. Rouse jumped out early and never trailed in the first quarter until the Tigers took a 10-9 lead at the 2.45 mark. Never to trail again. Even so, they were unable to shake the Raiders. It was 16-11 after one. DS would lead as much as eight (23-15) but by the half, it was down to 26-25. After three, it was back up to 39-31. They would increase that to fourteen (45-31) early in the fourth and looked to take charge for an easy finish. Not so, as Rouse got it back to three (56-53) with twelve seconds left. However, Aiden Bailey closed it out with a pair of free throws.

Westlake, always one of the top 6A programs in the area, not to mention the state, no doubt, posed the biggest problem on the Tigers schedule. The Chaparrals have a player that is on his way to play for the Kansas Jay Hawks and he was definitely the major difference in the 61-42 result. Not only that, he definitely had other tall and well disciplined teammates that put the Tigers at a disadvantage.

However, the Tigers took to the challenge and played hard throughout the game. The problem was the height and pressure by Westlake forced the Tigers into a poor shooting night. They were 13-30 from the two range but saw their 3-game take a hit at 2-15. Westlake had a fast 8-0 start before the Tigers could get involved in the scoring game and matched baskets. It was 9-15 after one. Westlake continued to expand their lead in the second quarter and went to the break leading 35-16. Both teams stayed on even terms in the third as it ended 51-32. Ditto for the fourth.

The Tigers played Austin High last Tuesday and will have another pair of good games next week, both at home. On Tuesday night will be Lake Travis and SA Southwest on Friday. Teams all around are fighting the Covid-19 battle and it is always a plus just to get a game in. The Lady Tigers had to cancel their game with SA Marshall when they had a player or two test positive. The major problem is not the number of cases, but the number of contacts that have to quarantine as well.

Scoring vs Rouse: Max Stewart 20, Bailey 15, Felix Gonzales 9, Tony Parra 8, Charles Hunt 3, Cade Brunson 2, Dylan Ducharme 1.

Vs Westlake: Stewart 9, Parra 8, Greyson Jones 4, Bailey 4, Hunt 3, Gonzales 2, Davis Budge 2, Jackson Friedman 2, Brunson 2, Ducharme 1.
