Cross Country On To State

The Lady Tigers cross country team had earned a place at the Regional IV meet in Corpus Christi by placing second at District. Once again they would have to challenge the No. 1 team in the state, Boerne Champion. The point total in cross country is attained by adding the places of your top five runners. This time with more top runners in the meet squeezing into higher places, the Lady Tigers were able to flip the results on Boerne Champion to take the Regional title and earn their usual spot in the state meet. It will be held at Old Settlers Park in Round Rock next Monday, November 23. Tiger, Caleb Lopez, will join the party at state by virtue of his third place finish with a time of 15.57.39.

Middle School Volleyball Roundup

Both of the Dripping Springs Middle Schools, Sycamore Springs and Dripping Springs have concluded their volleyball season. The results of each school shows the program has good promise in the coming years. When middle schools split the district's enrollment, it weakens the quality of a team selected from total enrollment. However, the plus side is participants and experience chances are doubled and the pool of talent is broadened as the schools return the players to the one high school. The more you can choose from, the better the opportunity to have a consistent top notch program. The district the two schools play in are similar in nature. Lake Travis has three middle schools and Westlake two. Under the new Covid rules by the UIL, tournaments are out and each school just plays district games, so each team played six games this year.

Coach Jonathan Cook reported the following results from the Dripping Springs MS four teams and added the MVP for each team. 8A: 5-1 (Eloise Roffers); 8B: 6-0 (Kyler King); 7A: 5-1 (Sydney Lund); 7B: 4-2 (Kendall Luttrull).

At Sycamore Springs, Coach Tory Blakemore reported the results of her teams. 8A: 3-3; 8B: 2-4; 7A: 6-0; 7B: 5-1.

Varsity Football Results

Due to all the Covid-19 cancellations in district play, Coach Zimmerman looked around for an opponent rather than have another two weeks off. They were able to match up with the Mansfield Timberview Wolves, a Div 5A-II team. In addition, the Wolves were undefeated, state-ranked and had numerous D1 players on the team, not to mention lines that averaged over 300 pounds on each side of the ball--a definite and needed challenge to the Tigers as they prepare for a playoff run. They have not been getting this type of competition in their scheduled teams.

The Tigers played hard but were out-matched throughout the game, falling behind 55-7 before being able to score three late in the fourth quarter. The final was 55-28.

It was evident early on it could be a long night. Mansfield took the opening KO and marched down to the 13 before losing a fumble. Three and out for the Tigers allowed a 66 yard drive, making it 7-0. The Tigers stopped the next drive and then had a 65 TD pass called back. A bad snap on the punt turned the ball over to the Wolves at the two, bringing the score to 13-0. The next time the 55 TD pass from Austin Novosad to Cameron O'Banan would not be called back. Coleman Chapman made it a 7-13 game at the end of first quarter.

Mansfield would score on all three possessions in the second quarter to make it 35-7 at the half. After scoring another TD late in the third, the Wolves took out most of their key players for the game. The Wolves scored twice more early in the fourth. However, the Tigers kept battling. They scored on a 61 yard pass to Preston Alford. The Tigers recovered the muffed KO at the 40 and the Novosad to O'Banan combo accounted for that distance in two plays. The last from the 11. The Tigers recovered a fumble and hit Noah Lawyer from 13 out for the final points.

Unless something just jumps out, the Tigers will probably not have a game this Friday night. The final two opponents, Hays Johnson and Seguin, are vying for the title and will have to be dealt with by the Tigers.
