Varsity Girls Basketball Results

The Lady Tigers basketball team is in a streak of three games where the win-loss margin was three or less. Unfortunately, the Lady Tigers picked the wrong games to be on the losing side, as two of the three were district games. First, Veterans Memorial made a four-point advantage (11-7) after one hold up for the remainder of the game. It was 19-16 at the break with the Lady Tigers gaining another basket after three. This brought the score to 25-24. The final quarter ended in a 13-13 tie giving Memorial the final 38-37 win.

Next, was the Cougarettes of New Braunfels Canyon, one of the teams leading the district. Again it would go down to the final possession as Canyon would hang on for a 38-35 victory. Shooting accuracy definitely was a factor as DS could only muster a 3-15 effort from the three range and 8-23 from two. From the line it was 10-18.

A visit to Round Rock Westwood produced a quality win as the Lady Tigers overcame a 3-point deficit (32-29) after three to win by two. The final was 42-40. No stats available at press time.

Vs VM: Scoring: Ally Beck 10, Corbyn Davis 9, Caroline Gamble 7, Chloe Fredenburg 4, Ashleigh Aksamit 3, Teagan Huslig 2, Ella Smith 2. Rebounds: Beck 6, Aksamit 3, Fredenburg 3. Assists: Davis 2, Gamble 2, Huslig 2, Beck 2. Steals: Davis 5.

Vs NBC: Scoring: Beck 17, Davis 5, Huslig 5, Gamble 4, Smith 4. Rebs: Gamble 4, Huslig 3, Beck 3. Assts: Davis 3. Steals: Davis 2, Huslig 2, Beck 2.

Varsity Boys Basketball Results

Dripping Springs was able to get in some basketball games over the holidays. The Tigers split with non-district opponents St. Michaels and Smithson Valley. St. Michaels fell easily 57-31, whereas Smithson Valley hung on for a 68-62 win.

On New Year's eve, the Tigers hosted district leader Boerne Champion for a key game. BC showed why they are 11-1 on the season and undefeated in district. Their overall height dominated the Tigers, especially when it came to rebounding. There were not many second chances on shots and difficult to get near the basket as their 7-27 effort from the two-zone shows.

DS went out to a 5-0 lead but then scoring slowed down as BC slowly but surely ended up with an 11-8 lead after one. A 9-0 run between the Tigers two baskets left the score 24-12 at the break. No major runs in the third as BC continued to lead 35-21. The Tigers were able to narrow the score to ten (27- 37) but could get no closer with a final score of 51-30.

Vs SM: Jayden Guevara 19, Jude Donovan 12, Aidan Bailey 8, Davis Budge 7, Greyson Jones 4, Dylan Ducharme 3, Max Stewart 2, Cade Brunson 2.

Vs SV: Guevara 26, Bailey 14, Tony Parra 8, Felix Gonzales 5, Donovan 4, Stewart 3, Luke Lawyer 2.

Vs BC: Guevara 7, Bailey 7, Parra 6, Donovan 6, Gonzales 2, Lawyer 2.

More Golden Anniversaries

The 1970-71 school year was a boom year for Dripping Springs athletics. Too bad the Lone Star Trophy was not being awarded in those days because Dripping Springs would definitely have been a high finisher. As a refresher, Dripping Springs had been moved up to Class A in the UIL after spending their history competing in Class B. The previous year saw near misses in almost all the sports offered at the time, leaving a good nucleus of returning experience in most sports. Although it would be new territory for DS, some of the district names were familiar. Blanco and Johnson City were once district rivals but had moved up a couple of cycles before. DS continued to keep them on their schedule, as well as having Comfort there too. The other two provided long bus trips in the form of Bandera and Sabinal. So at least, DS would be facing a few opponents they knew something about.

We previously chronicled the golden anniversary of the 1970 football championship season, and this time we will be chronicling two more golden anniversaries in the form of the two basketball teams who enjoyed championship seasons as well.

The Tigerettes (as the Lady Tigers were known at the time) were in the midst of a five-season title winning streak. The year before they had carved out a 30-7 record and were within a whisker of making it to state as they lost in the regional finals. Also, at this time, the girls played 6-girl basketball which split the court in half with three forwards on one side and three guards on the other end. The Tigerettes would return their three starting forwards and one starting guard with plenty of others with playing experience.

As it turned out, only one team, Comfort, would prove to be competition. The other schools provided only limited opposition in one-sided games. Comfort would upset the Tigerettes by one-point in their first matchup. DS was able to get past Comfort the next round by five points, which pointed to a one-game playoff in the future because only the champion got to make the playoffs in those days.

Disaster struck, when leading scorer, Deb Spillar, incurred a serious ankle sprain. The race was on to get her healed enough to be on the court for the playoff. She made it and the Tigerettes took the game by seven. Just like the football team, the Tigerettes met up with a good Jourdanton team and went down by a substantial score, ending their 27-6 season.

The Tigers had missed the championship in basketball the previous year by one misplay. From this team four starters returned. Unfortunately, one starter, Cecil McIntyre, had to miss the season due to a football knee injury. At the same time, a potential starter the year before had missed that year due to a football leg injury. So the Tigers were prepared to compete in a very strong district. Blanco had always had a very good basketball program and was the overwhelming favorite to easily take the district title. However, one does not get beauty points for margins of victory, only victories.

The Tigers squeezed by Comfort and Sabinal twice, plus defeating Blanco by three. The fly in the ointment for the Panthers was Sabinal. Sabinal defeated Blanco just prior to DS doing the same, giving Blanco two losses and DS none. The Blanco coach had his boys all shave their heads in an act of unification. Yes, they defeated the Tigers by 24 in the next match but the Tigers did not falter in any other game and ended up being the champs. The Tigers played a good game against a Laredo United team, but finally succumbed in the first overtime 75-73.

The Spring sports also had successful seasons. The boys track team gained a championship while the girls track team finished second. Boys golf won district and the baseball team finished third. Tennis was the only other sport offered at the time.

Soccer Season Underway

The Dripping Springs excellent soccer program is now getting underway and all are hoping this season will get to have a conclusion. Last year the two district champs with aspirations of making it to the state tournament had their seasons terminated just as the playoffs were to begin by Covid-19. The threat still remains but as all sports have experienced so far this school year, a team just has to take their season game by game and make whatever adjustments are needed to stay the course. Both teams have been able to get in some valuable playing time in scrimmages which are allowed during December. They hope to hit the ground running this month. In the upcoming season, the two soccer teams will be facing much stronger opposition in the new assigned district. The past two years have been mostly blowout scores.

The Lady Tigers made it to state two years ago and finished last season with a 21-1 record and a valid dream of returning. Although young this year, they have some very experienced players that played during the state tourney run to bind the team together for another run. Coach Bailee Perrine reported they have some strong seniors to lead the team including their leading scorer, Sofia Picucci, Avery Davis and Rylie Flores. In their scrimmage games she started four seniors, six sophomores and one freshman. Her stated goal for the team “Is to have them play as a team and stay healthy.”

Coach Josh Hill heads up the Tigers squad. A report was not received on their coming year but no doubt it is similar to the Lady Tigers. They had a 20-3 record last year and returned many of those players.
