Lady Tigers Basketball Results

The varsity girls basketball team is already knee-deep into district play. They had to delay the start of part of their season when hit by the twoweek quarantine from Covid. They are 2-2 in district play and 3-6 on the season. They opened with a 56-27 loss to Boerne Champion and then overpowered Hays Johnson 48-27. They had a 57-36 win over Alamo Heights and a 38-37 loss to Veterans Memorial. Unfortunately, the Covid season has also messed with the ability to get the stats for these games.

Alamo Heights came to DS for the district matchup. Although AH came in with a weak record, it turned out they did produce some scrappy players and they would make a game of it for a while before finally faltering before the more experienced Lady Tigers barrage of shots 57-36.

On this night the Lady Mules played a zone defense and the Lady Tigers chose to fire away from outside the three. Even though the percentage was not that good 11-36 from three and 7-29 from two, the more shots put up the more times you will have a chance for one to go in. On the strength of threes, DS went up 9-0 before AH hit a free throw. DS matched that, plus a three to go ahead 13-3 before AH narrowed it to 13-11 after one.

Alamo Heights tied it in the opening seconds of the second quarter and that would basically be their last hurrah as the Lady Tigers slowly pulled ahead. They went to the locker room with a 33-17 advantage with Corbyn Davis having four threes. AH made a little run early in the third and late but could not sustain as all of the Lady Tigers were getting in on the action as DS held a comfortable 42-32 lead after three. DS had 14 free throw attempts during the final stanza as they would go on an 11-0 run.

Scoring for the Lady Tigers were Davis 15, Caroline Gamble 11, Ally Beck 8, Teagan Huslig 6, Chloe Fredenberg 5, Lilee McGinnis 3, Hayden Ely 3, Ashleigh Aksamit 2, Gesena Mitchhart 2, Makynna Hubbard 2.

Varsity Boys Basketball Results

As we have mentioned before, the varsity Tigers basketball program had to postpone all games and practices for a couple of weeks due to Covid. However, the Tigers have found a way to make up game time in the past two games. They simply play a lot of overtime games. They opened district play with Alamo Heights and lost a nail biter in three OT's 83-78. Next they took on SA Veteran's Memorial and it took two extra periods to salt them away 57-54 to even their district record at 1-1.

Have not been able to get any stats on the thriller at AH. Talked with Coach Swannack about the game and he related. He said that late in the fourth quarter they had a substantial lead but a couple of turnovers helped the Mules close the gap to tie the game by the quarter's end. The first OT found the Tigers falling behind and looked a little bleak but they kept playing hard and good things started to happen. Again a tie game. It was a battle in the second OT but at the end it also was a tie game. The Tigers just finally ran out of steam in the third OT.

Veterans group was very active all night long. They played a full-court, man-to-man press that left little breathing room. Both teams pushed to the basket and the rebounding made it hard to get more than one shot each trip down the court. Much fouling went on, putting players on the line frequently. Lack of accuracy there gave both teams trouble. The Tigers were 1-4 and VM 2-10 in the first. VM had the biggest lead at 6-2 as the quarter ended 8-10.

A pair of free throws by Jayden Guevara quickly tied it at 10. There were three ties and three lead changes as the half ended 18-18. Ditto for the third. AH would extend their lead to six (26-20) but the Tigers would chip away and Aidan Bailey dropped in a three to tie it at 32-32. VM used three early turnovers to move out to a 40-34 lead but true to form, the Tigers would ask no quarter as they fought back. VM would hold their lead for the rest of the quarter until Guevara would step to the line with 31 seconds left and nail both to tie the regulation game 44-44. VM would go for the last shot but messed it up. Now it was on to OT.

VM decided to sit on the ball for most of the OT as they held a slim lead. Bailey hit a two with 2.51 left to tie the game at 47-47. VM stalled the rest and failed in the last attempt. Back to playing. Guevara brought the Tigers their first lead with three FT, then later got it back again with a three. Bailey would make two free throws in the final 20 seconds and VM could not make a three to tie.

Scorers for the Tigers were Guevara 20, Bailey 17, Jackson Friedman 8, Tony Parra 6, Felix Gonzales 5, Charles Hunt 1.

Tigers Exit Playoffs

It was known the Tigers would be facing a pretty formidable opponent in the form of the Manvel Mavericks in the Area game. However, the Tigers knew they were a pretty good team as well and did not go into the game cowering. They gave all they had and finally were worn down by the potent running attack of the Mavericks as they bowed out 38-21. The Tigers were outrushed 381-141 and 51 plays eats up so much time on the clock and if you do not have the ball you will not score.

Manvel was strong on both sides of the ball. Cameron O'Banan drew attention all night but the Tigers were still able to target him 17 times but the defense would come from the pressure on the QB. Austin Novosad was not able to enjoy much time which affected his accuracy on passes he was usually spot on all year.

Manvel took the opening KO and marched to the eight before having to settle for a 25FG. The Tigers would start at the 33 and take 10 plays, seven in the air, including the Novosad to O'Banan TD from the 18. Coleman Chapman was true on the EP. 7-3. Manvel quickly moved 73 in four plays to score on a 4-run to go ahead 10-7. Another promising drive was stopped in the first when Spencer Dance recovered a fumble as the quarter ended 10-7.

Later in the second the Tigers moved the ball 68 in three. After an incomplete pass, Preston Alford was hauled down after a 63- yard run and then scored from the five. 14-10. The Mavericks did not waste any time as they drove 79 yards, climaxing the drive with an amazing 33 catch in the endzone with two Tigers contesting for the ball to take a 17-14 lead to the half.

A promising drive by the Tigers to start the second half was thwarted by a lost fumble at 28. On the first play, a Maverick back got outside a stacked Tiger defense and out-raced everyone for a one-play drive. 24-14. The Tigers took over on the 27. A Novosad to O'Banan pass took care of 59. Alford had three, then a 5-penalty. Another pass to O'Banan got it to the one and Alford took it in from there. 21-24. Another 67 TD reception got it back to ten at 31-21 with 5.57 remaining in the third. From that point the Mavericks would control the ball and clock with 25 plays, mostly running, to eat up land and time. Manvel had four backs that were simply a load to take down. They would score one more time in the fourth on their one full drive of the quarter.

No doubt the 6-4 Tigers were disappointed with the way the season ended but there should be no disappointment in their performance during this game or the season. They played hard and well all year and never gave up until the final horn. The teams they lost too were very good teams who knew they had been in a battle when they played the Tigers. Hopefully next year can return to a normal season.
