Decade Playoff Games

1968 Bi-District: The Tigers were paired against Bracketville. They guaranteed DS $500 to play the game in Uvalde. That was a lot of money in those days. Just prior to the game a giant rain storm came through discouraging attendance. The Tigers started fast and defeated Bracketville 35-8, taking the money and getting to play another game. Dennis Sansom would have a big night with three TD passes and a run score. Ray Whisenant would get the scoring started with a one-run. Sansom would hit Paul Freitag for a 25 TD. Two-point passes to Freitag and Jimmy Stigler made it 16-0 after one. A 47 pass to Joe Williamson and Whisenant PAT made it 23-0 at half. Sansom sneaked from the one and a 35 pass to Williamson ended scoring. Bracket scored late. Sansom rushed for 43 and passed for 171. John Murray rushed for 64. Chester Kalinowska rushed for 45 and intercepted a pass. Freitag had two intercepts and Stigler one.

1968 Regional: Tigers met Banquete at Kenedy. On the first possession Sansom hit Freitag in the flat and he streaked down the sideline for a 55 TD. Whisenant made it 7-0. Looked like another easy one. Not so fast. Banquete had a patient three yards and a cloud of dust mentality. DS was on defense all night and battled long and hard. It was 7-0 at half and 7-6 after three. The fourth proved fatal. A safety gave them the lead and then a pass TD and another safety put the Tigers away 16-7. The Tiger defense had to defend the run 78 times for 235 yards which is a 3 yard average but four times three gives a team a first down. Randy Garnett rushed for 40 as the Tigers only ran 33 plays.

1988 Bi-District: Tigers took on Somerset at Smithson Valley. It was a barnburner as DS came back to take a 39-35 win.DS led 14-7 after one. The game was tied 14-14 at half and Somerset went ahead 21-20 after three. Fireworks broke out to the very finish. Michael Myers and Todd Reimers had short runs for TD's in the first. Myers on a one-yard plunge scored the lone TD in the third. Reimers had another TD run to put the Tigers back in the lead. Somerset scored and Myers replied with a 95 KOR to go back ahead. The big play occurred next when Jeff Trevino, a guard, lumbered 34 yards for the score as the QB put the ball beside the center's leg and faked elsewhere. It fooled everyone as Trevino picked up the ball and headed for the endzone to the amazement of everyone. Somerset would score again but Tigers ran out the clock.

1988 Area: For the second week in a row the Tigers took on Bulldogs. This time it was Sweeny at Brenham. Sweeny had a gigantic team, men among boys. Tigers could not handle them and it was 40-0 at half. Sweeny called off the dogs in the second half and the score ended 47-18 to end the Tigers run in the playoffs. DS scored on a 46 run by Reimers in the third. In the fourth Myers scored on a hook and lateral pass when Brett Boydston hit John Russell who lateraled to Myers who raced the final 46. Later in the game Myers would score on a 68 run.
