Decade Football Games
Once again we will follow the Dripping Springs football teams from each decade that corresponds with the 2018 season.
1938: This was the very first game ever played by a Dripping Springs football team. It was the first year of UIL six-man football. The UIL bigwigs R.J. Kidd and Roy Bedicek attended the game at Prairie Lea. Prairie Lea had played a practice game the spring before and it showed as the Indians scalped the Tigers 74-7. Outstanding athlete, E.E. Myers scored the lone TD. It also marked the first time Dripping Springs would be called Tigers (maroon & gold). Previously they were the Cardinals (red and white).
1948: The Tigers dropped their opener to Blanco 6-0.
1958: Dripping Springs would have a short season when the UIL banned them from playing UIL teams because of playing an ineligible player the year before and had to play five private schools for a season. San Marcos Academy blanked the Tigers 55-0. Lewis Gravell led the Tigers in rushing with 58 yards in 14 carries.
1968: This would be a championship season but Blanco spoiled the opener with a hard-fought 12-0 victory. Dennis Sansom, Randy Garnett and Paul Freitag led the offensive attack.
1978: After a scoreless first half, Hays would push across a couple of TD's to win a 14-0 verdict. Vern McCarty and James Godwin were leading rushers.
1988: The Tigers opened their playoff season with a 35-12 win over Blanco. Nelson Fowler had 99 yards rushing and Brett Boydston had 141 yards of total offense to lead the balanced attack.
1998: For many years Bandera provided the opener for the Tigers. On this year the Tigers got the better of it 39-12. Britt Peterson had 146 yards total offense and was greatly aided by Matt Hightower, Tony Salazar and Chad Sandahl on offense.
2008: The Gonzales Apaches were no match for the Tigers in the 40-14 opener. Jacob Moore and Jeff Tuck provided the offensive spark from their QB positions.
