Baseball takes series from Southwest

All scored climaxed by Ty Kaatz's double to regain the lead. Unfortunately that would not hold up in the sixth when SW scored five of their own with the help of three walks, three hits and a balk.

Two well-pitched games were key to the Dripping Springs Tigers success in winning the Area series with San Antonio Southwest and being able to move to the regional quarter-final round of the baseball playoffs. The first game was played in Somerset with the Tigers shutting out the Cougars 5-0. In the home game the Tigers had a one-inning collapse and the result was an 8-7 loss. That necessitated a third and final game played in San Antonio. With the help of errors and pitching miscues, the Tigers would take advantage for the clinching 5-2 victory. Now the Tigers 24-11-1 will take on Kerrville Tivy 26-10. Check with the school website for more details.

Amid a rainy day backdrop, the Tigers made the trip worth their while in the first game. The Tigers got on board in the first when Brendan Frickel doubled and scored on an error. As it turns out, that would have been enough. However, insurance runs came in the third when Nick Gullo helped his cause with a double, scoring on an error. Ryan Davenport reached on that error and scored on Nico Ramirez's double to take a 3-0 lead. In the seventh Ramirez walked and Chris Tyree singled. Both scored on Cameron O'Banan's single and Zach Tjelmeland's double.

The second game started well for the Tigers. Tyree walked and scored on RJ Cabela's single. O'Banan stroked a single to score Cabela. A walk, sac, ground out and single netted SW one in the third. They took the lead with two on three hits and a passed ball in the fifth. DS was gifted in the bottom of the fifth when Davenport reached on a strikeout, Ramirez singled, Tyree on an error, O'Banan and Tjelmeland singled. All scored climaxed by Ty Kaatz's double to regain the lead. Unfortunately that would not hold up in the sixth when SW scored five of their own with the help of three walks, three hits and a balk. The Tigers were unable to get any back.

Another walk and two hits got SW on the board in the first inning of the third game. DS went ahead in the third when Ramirez singled and Tyree was hit by a pitch. Ramirez scored when Cabela reached on an error and O'Banan bunted in Tyree. A walk and a triple knotted the score for SW. The next inning had Nick Gullo leading off with a homerun and Davenport doubling before scoring off two wild pitches as the Tigers took the lead. Price Siemering squelched a potential rally in the sixth when he relieved Tjelmeland with two on via walks. Another walk loaded the bases but Siemering got the last three outs on a fielder's choice, sac and strikeout. A two-out single by Cabela in the seventh allowed him to score on an error and balk.
