1994 State Champions to be honored

For those that were around in 1994 when the Lady Tigers set the ultimate bar of success, it no doubt does not feel like it has been a quarter of a century since the Lady Tigers won the state championship in basketball. This group of Dripping Springs athletes will be honored at the January 11th game with Reagan. For those who gave great fan support then, it should be a neat reunion to see, bringing back those old memories. For the others that were not around, it will be great to see the group that set a standard Lady Tigers have been pursuing since.

This group was oh so close to having that be the second championship in a row. The previous year they had taken a 33-3 record to the finals against Dimmitt. Nerves seemed to take over and they did not play their best ball and lost 59-51. The disappointment of this loss and the fact the core of this team returned for another try spurred them on with great resolve.

The 93-94 team enjoyed another special year, making it back to the state finals with a 35-3 record. They would match up with Waco LaVega, a team with a fantastic player who was instrumental in putting one of those losses on the Lady Tigers record. It was a stinging 75-62 defeat in the Waco Midway tourney. It would not be a repeat in the finals as the Lady Tigers played lights out and dominated LaVega 64-56.

The seniors put their stamp on Dripping Springs basketball history early on as they went undefeated in middle school including a 17-0 record in the eighth grade. In their four-year high school stint they helped the school to a 119-22 record. Members of the squad were seniors: Sandi Bourland, Dusty Eickenloff, Melanie McMullin, Chandra Moore, Cassell Puryear. Others: Tamara Crane, Angie Ketch, Dawn Phillips, Katie Stienke, Sarah Strait, Jinni Touchstone. Coach Jerry English and his wife, Barbara, headed up the program for 13 years and became the all-time winning DS coach with 331 victories
